Ok, so I guess no one knows why one end is smaller.

I had considered the weight, but why would the head end need less coverage than the foot end if sleeping diagonally? I would rather have my feet wet as my head.
Like I said, I'm assuming those guesses.
The Shangri La reminds me of the Clark tarp.
Bad picture, but you get the idea. The head end is narrow and the foot end is wide. It's a similar shape overall, but not cat-cut like the Shangri La.

A close up with a WBBB (or similar) under it would sure be nice. That said, I'll wager this tarp is big enough to shelter the hammock on either end. It is leading the pack for my next tarp.
The tapered design of the tarp gives coverage at the head in more than the foot, saving weight. But the foot end is still around 7 foot across, so still plenty of coverage I think.

I sent Paul a PM asking for clarification and that he post his design idea behind the tarp here at this thread.
Thanks, I'm interested in knowing.
WBBB is wider at the head end with the two pullouts so naturally needs more coverage ...... I think
Hey Everyone. The shape for the Alpine and Shangri La tarps really came from Topplestack in this thread. His idea for an Asym tarp got me to thinking at just the right time...weeks before we were to be launching the tarp line. I really liked his idea and requested to try it out. I played with the cuts and made what we would offer as the Alpine. At near the same time I had been wanting to offer something that would be a good fit over a WBBB, I talked that over with someone that had no issues with me giving it a try. Well in cutting out panels for the the Alpine one thing led to another and the Shangri La as a simple hop from the Aline. Rather than trying to do an entire new layout for the WBBB shaped tarp the panels that I was cutting for the Alpine were a good match for the layout that I had rolling around in my mind. Functionally you can hang it either way and not be wrong. Though for the best coverage over a BB I would put the wide end over the Head/shelf/tieout end. On any other hammock it would mostly be preference and come down to how hard of a asym lay you want to put on your hammock. For me, with a smaller tarp like the Shangri La most of my gear---including breakfast from the hammock stuff is going to be near my head end so that I can just reach out without even sitting up so the wider end of the tarp will be to the head no matter the hammock I am using.
As to why pick it....well cause it is cool, gives you more coverage than a simply narrower tarp and save weight when you can get away with it. For me it will be the tarp I take (in Idaho) from May though early September, if I lived in TX like Alan then I could probably stretch that 2-3 more months of the year or better. After all it is a fair weather tarp like a OES Micro or a WB edge, that will give you protection should you need it, but it is not a 4 season tarp either.
Hope that helps some
Green is just about sold out and stealth Brown will take over for a little while till I get more of the green in again.
