Haha that was quick: I can live with "personal best" though Anyways all we did is drive to a site and set up. Sort of like storm chasing, we wouldn't have been camping at all this weekend if it weren't for the forecast. Don't know that we'll ever get a shot at the -40s but you never know

I should have known it would be Turk.
From the video I saw, Turk was hanging in a hot tent Is that the same?

i didn't read any of this beyond the title of the post, so forgive me if i'm off base...

we really need to be clear. there is a distinct differnece b/c hanging after hiking all day and walking out of your warm house after eating a warm supper and hanging in the backyard...

please don't take that as an insult (i sure as hell haven't been out below 0 yet) those of you going out in the -20s. but there needs to be some definition

Minus 24 in the Boundary Waters

I did a week in the Boundary Waters (two weeks ago). The lowest night was minus 24...in my hammock pea pod style! We were on Flash Lake which is about 18 miles east of Ely.

I think spending the night out in the hammock is all that matters - backyard, campground, deep in the woods, it is all good.

Adding hiking or any other activity into it as a requirement really should not be a consideration. Once you start down that road it get silly real quick, how many miles, how many hours, how much elevation gain.

Most importantly, if you know what you are doing, hammocking after hiking all day is exactly as easy as walking out of your warm house after eating a warm supper and hanging in your back yard

    I agree!
Though my personal record is from hanging in my backyard I totally agree. It is something else to sleep outside in those temperatures after a long hike. BUT it was still very cold and when testing gear I think it´s the proper way to do it in the backyard (if possible). Safety first!
