Educate me on weather socks please

I had some issues with condensation on my down UQ this weekend and want to look at something I can put in place to stop it.

Am I right in thinking I need something like a weather sock ?

Would that just be a piece of ripstop/pertex etc to go around the outside of my UQ ?

Sorry for the numpty questions but I need to know

Pretty much Rich. I'm using some breathable parachute fabric which firstly cuts out a lot of the wind issues and also gives the dew/condensation something to bind to instead of your quilt. You could easily do the same with a bit of standard ripstop nylon or Pertex. In terms of construction it's basically an all-encompassing cocoon and so far has worked really well in foggy/low cloud conditions

    Check out Shug's latest vid.

He has fabricated a "bibb" out of fleece that goes around his neck and is attached to the ridgeline. From the vid it appeared that most of the condensate landed on the bibb. Pretty neat!

    Cheers Dan

I've bought 3m of this stuff to try and work something out ....

Gailainne put me onto Jeffs Hammock Sock tutorial but I'm not really looking for the enclosed thing, just something to cover the UQ really.

I'll get the Snugfit out tonight and see what's what, I might be able to make it really easy for myself and use some of the tabs sewn into the SF already.

Not quite what I'm looking for though, I just need something to go on the outside of my UQ to help it keep a bit drier.

Maybe weather sock was the wrong choice of words ?

If the condensation is on the outside of your gear from fog or such, then a weather sock/shield may help. But if the condensation is from perspiration condensing as it travels from your body out through your insulation, then a sock may make things worse as it further limits how much your insulation breathes plus it traps more of your breath increasing humidity.

I'm pretty sure it was down to the weather conditions Knotty, a constant fog or haze in the air which never really burnt off as the day warmed up. At night there was ice on the inside of the tarp and on the outer shell of the UQ.
As far as I know I'm not a sweaty sleeper so I'm putting it down to the weather me thinks.

I've ordered 3m of this stuff today so I'll see if I can figure something out when it comes.

I thought I could lay out my Snugfit on the ground and then just make the Pertex cover a few inches bigger all round, make a channel at the ends and put a length of shock cord through it.
