1/2 UQ for Bridge and Clark hammocks

well being a DIY quilt newbe and all, I knew that 900 was "better" than 850 is "better" than 650 and so on, but didn't know or look up the units. But if I'd done your math I still would have been confused, because 4.32 oz is still between 1 bag and 2!

but I'm on it now. All I need is 1.1 oz camo and I'm in business. Oh wait, there's down to get. And a vacuum cleaner or something if I remember right. And that time thing...

FWIW, down is rated under lab conditions where it's very dry and allowed to fluff. In trail conditions, down is rarely that dry, doesn't have days to loft, and is repeatedly compressed in between loftings...so it won't measure up to the loft rated in the lab. That's one reason overstuff is good.

So while something measures 900fp in the lab, and it's marginally better than 850 or 800, you'll probably notice more difference when you're making it than you'll ever notice on the trail. (I bought my down from Ed Speer.)

Grizz the other thing to keep in mind is dividing the stuff up for the baffles. Hangnout has three different sections and one is larger so it will get more down. So you get to play more with the numbers to find out
Some people make it sound like it's hard to work with down, but I didn't find it all that bad. I followed some advice Ayce from thru-hiker gave me. I had a scale placed in a huge storage bucket, something like this.

Tare a bag or vessel and start adding down. Have the quilt there ready to receive the down. You'll want one end sewn so you have a 'tube' with just one end open. So with your calculated weight you add down til you get enough. However, if it's too much go ahead and add it to the tube and keep the running total till you get enough for that section. Repeat for the other sections. You obviously don't want to be in a windy room, etc. but any down that gets wings will most likely stay in the bucket. Simply pick it up and use it.

20% overstuff brings it to 5.18, just throw the rest in the middle

To make it real easy just make the center section the size for 3oz of down and dump the bag in. The outside two sections split the next bag using a scale like suggested above.

I posted some pictures of the Clark with the UQ setup and my cuben tarp. Going to test it tonight since it going to be in the teens and supposed to feel like single digits due to 20 mph winds.

Could you use the 5.0 oz Climashield XP for a half size underquilt and loop thru it like the Ray Jardine quilt kit? I wonder what the temperature rating would be with one layer?

On the bridge, do you run shock cord from corner of quilt to corner of hammock?

Just for fun I'm going to try hanging a JRB Nest essentially folded in half, doubled up at the top, to double the loft under my torso.

I was thinking of using elastic cord from both ends and sewing ties on the hammock body to attach each corner of the quilt where I want it to be. The drawstrings on each end of the quilt would draw it up to the hammock. Once it was adjusted once, it would be easy to reattach just like a full length quilt

a dumb question - with a 1/2 under quilt, what do you do if you have to go to ground??

I know, plan ahead and not have to do that, but Murphy's Law dictates no matter how much I plan, it will happen.
