Thanks for the great trip report. Many years ago I was stationed at Plattsburg AFB. Even though I was a young'un from South Georgia, I really loved my years there. Here is a link to an audio story I head on NPR just this morning about snowshoeing in your cold weather.

    Thanks again!

I am in awe of your temperature setting record. That is beyond cold! I'm shivering just thinking about it! I've seen minus 40 F while living in the Great White North years ago. Had to plug the truck into an engine block heater just to get it to start in the morning. And, it took a good 1/8 of a mile ride down the road just to work the flat spots out of the tires. Whoooooo Buddy!

I was worried about starting my 2009 Honda Fit, but Festus started it after a few times trying to turn it over at the site. 0w-20 oil and a good battery FTW!

congratulations on the sucessful trip Festus! Makes me envious of all that cold weather you guys have been hogging :P.

I am just wondering if you noticed any serious condensation on the top of your bag or on the top of the hammock sock?

That was a cold hang. I bailed out last week from the 19th-23rd I was supposed to be in northern WI. Recorder temps were down to -37 on Thursday night. That may have been a record breaker but I wasn't going to be the one to do it. Congrats on surviving the cold! The pictures are great too.

Well, I did have condensation. I'm not sure how to qualify whether it was serious or not... every once in a while I'd move around a little and feel some fine "snow" on my face, no biggie though. Everything was getting condensation the whole trip... facial hair, collars, front of jacket, microfleece hood... I think it's unavoidable.

The condensation in the sock seemed no worse than what I'd seen on my tarp on previous trips, maybe not even quite as bad. It's ventilated head and foot, and more breathable than a tarp. I'd have had no issue getting back in the next night if we'd camped more than one night, if that answers your question?
