I'm in!! It is a great idea to take advantage of our winter weather while we can. If we are trying to stay centrally located in the state, how about somewhere in the Croom/Withlacoochee River area. This is just off I-75 near Bushnell, south of the Florida Turnpike turnoff. Maybe Hog Island so our paddlers can get wet, hikers can jump on the FT and we have plenty of trees to hang from. My .02 worth. Other ideas?

Croom and Richloam is my backyard and I have been knee deep there a few times. The loop is about 30 miles broken into a few smaller ones. The kayaking is not so great that I have seen, but I have been there as a backpacker. I can say this though--if we began at the Richloam Fire Tower and headed south to the FT and then back north on the blue blaze we would have a nice trip with varied terrain at a about a dozen miles. Not hard at all, but at least it is walking with packs. Campsites would be easy to find. Some water as I recall. I have good beefed up maps for the trail. Let's call that option #1 and see what Mad and Zuki and Dami come up with. I don't know Hog Island, but I would like to hear more--let's call that Option #2

I've done Croom, Green Swamp (east/west), Citrus, and Richloam but it's been a while. Never been to Hog Island though.

I have a feeling it's going to be pretty tough to find a place to make both the hikers and paddlers happy in the same weekend.

Some friends in the Wilderness Adventurers meetup group are hiking along the Kissimmee River next weekend. I'll be eager to see how that trip goes. Maybe we can copy them a bit.

I've had a really tough time finding interesting loop trails in FL (interesting trails at all for that matter). I'd say we're stuck at least shuttling a few vehicles depending on the size of the group.

Best case scenario is we can find a spot to base camp Friday night and shuttle some vehicles to the end. I'm sure a few folks won't make it out until early Saturday morning (sooner the better). I'll walk as little or as much as about anyone but 10-12/day in FL is a pretty easy hike.

Nope MrD. We need to set that as well. I agree with Zuki though, it will be hard enough to find a good trail for hiking, let alone a base for kayaking as well. When Islander gets his breath back he can build his idea of the island kayak trip he was envisioning.

I'm out here. Hard to resist...
I say instead of trying to be everything for many, try to keep it basic and be a good reasonable hike for those of us not as experienced as hikers, but enjoying the hike with others leading. Put off the kayaking for another trip
I'm ready, When are we going?

I highly suggest we check out Hog Island. I hiked through it a few weeks a go on a FT section leg. It looked PERFECT for a group hang. The paddling there (I understand) is very good too. I think you can take the Withlacoochee to the Gulf from there. maybe we can do a pre-hang scouting trip in the next few weeks. There are toilet and washroom facilities there as well.

I have also hiked Green Swamp @ Richloam and Croom, both good possibilities.

The FT passes through all of these so hiking is available.

I might attend the hang. I look forward to seeing the details unfold.
I like big hammocks - I cannot like.
