Colorado spring hang planning thread

An area I've been eyeballing for a while is the Powderhorn Primitive Area south of Gunnison. There are a series of lakes that would make for nice hikes (I love alpine lakes). The area is mostly comprised of plateau topography, so those that want miles can bust out plenty. Since it's a primitive area, there won't be any rules to worry about, just common sense. I hear it is beautiful country, but I have not seen it for myself. Anybody been there and can give a little detail?

I'd like to make this one as well--had a great time at the CO Winter Hang. March or early April would work out for me--have work travel mid-April to end of month.

Time to go google earth it...

Moving to Grand Junction in June. I will miss this one but will be ready for the next one!!

I would sure like to make this work. Barring yet another conflict, I will be there and don't care what type it is. I would vote for the Gunnison area, but OK with practically anything, the fewer "other" tourists, the better.

Hi there. I'm a new member to HF as of last night. I'm in Boulder as a mid-west transplant (via Ohio.) I've got a Hennessey standard a-sym expedition that I've taken out to the Indian Peaks and White River NF quite a bunch last season.

Southern CO sounds great -- I've never been South, only West so far around CO. What about some of the Wilderness areas in the San Juan NF? I typically prefer a longer hike in, but only because that usually means seeing less pedestrians. As long as there is relative isolation and relaxation, I'm in!

I just saw your intro thread, Owl, and when I was searching for links to all our hang planning, realized that you had posted here and not gotten any responses - primarily because we have no idea when or where we are gonna go, yet!

As far as the hike in, we've been pretty well isolated at every hang we've done, and none of them has been a severe hike in. In fact, I think they've all been less than two or three miles of hiking, and I don't remember seeing a single non-hammock soul at any of them. The ability to find relative isolation so easily is one of the things that's awesome about the Rockies - especially in cold weather!

no worries... I'm sure something will pull through! I think the only weekend I wouldn't be able to make it, is that of March 26th. yeah, 2 or 3 miles of a hike in is preferable for me also -- save the longer trips for an easy summer trek anyways

can't say that I've spent a night in the woods since the autumn... might have to get an impromptu overnighter going some Saturday (weather permitting, of course.) let's see how people start to sign-off as the time gets closer, though.
