we have done plenty of camping in the general area and have seen most of the islands first hand.
good hammock sites can be found, but you may want to bring the small tarp as it can get tight.
the surrounding area offers awesome red fish and trout fishing.
there are some smaller islands not far from there that are technically free first come first serve but dont expect much privacy on the weekends.
the islands in the nat seashore are pretty private but a decent amount of boat traffic can be found there.

the only bad thing about these sites is they are only able to be reserved a week in advance, but with plenty of islands that shouldnt be a problem.
True about the reservations but a bit of careful planning can ensure you get the camp you want. I'll start calling 12 days from the start of our trip to check availability, if it starts to get tight, I'll add a few days on the front end and reserve earlier.

For being snow and icebound (I haven't seen grass since end of Nov.) this trip is highly anticipated; especially after the roan mountain hang! Just save me two trees

Well if you like paddling there is a kayak/canoe trail that weaves through some mangroves. I'm planning to paddle it myself during the time we are there.

Here is the link for Canaveral National Seashore: http://www.nps.gov/cana/index.htm

There are some interesting things to see. We are also bringing two kayak sails with us if anyone wants to give them a try on the open waters of Mosquito Bay. Here's the link to the what they are: http://www.windpaddle.com/

I'll be going out on Thursday to scout the sites on Orange Island (campsites 1 & 2). I've heard that they have lots of shade, (which I take to mean plenty of trees) but want to check them myself.

I'll take a few pics and share my findings when I get back.

So for the mangrove paddle a short kayak would be best? Tell how long your recommend.

I've never had to consider if it would be tough for a longer yak. Our longest is only 13.5. I'll take a closer look at the trail this week and give you a more definitive answer.

Here is the a map of the canoe trail: http://www.nbbd.com/godo/cns/Brochur...ing/index.html

We have two 9.5 and a 13.5 foot SOT yaks. They are super stable and easy to paddle; anyone is welcome to have a go. They are perfect for the trails but a lot more work out in the lagoon. (That's why I have a sail.) The long, sleek boats are certainly easier and faster in the open water. If you bring a long boat but want to use a short one to do the trail, no problemo.

    Sea you there...

This sounds like a good trip! I'm waiting for my Black bird to get her in the mail, and I am itching to test it out. My mother lives in the cocoa beach area and I love kayaking and fishing the area. I'm not familiar with where the hang is going to be but would love to come and join y'all. I hung for the first time at the first annual FL hang and was hooked(or hung). It was an awesome experience. Hope I can make it, if there is room.
