    Baffels Sizes and Expected Loft

I have fianlly decided to make a down top quilt, and all the info I can find... So far I haven't found anythig that indicated the baffle to loft comaprison.

Meaning if you use 2" baffles. what is the expected loft hight?

I want to make a 20 degree top quilt and I'm a cold sleeper, so I thinking I will need 2.5-3 inches of loft of 800 fill down.

Has any one made a reference cahrt for baffle to loft ratio?

From wha tI know which is not much the baffle height is typically used.

If you are a cold sleeper, I would go 3" for 20D.

You may want to look at the Quilt Comparison Chart that Adam provided on Google Docs:

    https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?...EE&hl=en#gid=3

I believe that you can compare the ratings of the available quilts to their baffle height and get a good idea.

The baffle will be the thinnest part of the quilt. The amount of extra material you use for your differential baffles will ultimately determine how much extra loft may be attained.

I would say on average .5 to 1 inch will be gained, but it is probably debatable if you can count on that to determine your temp rating since the quilt thickness at the baffle sew line will be limited to the height of the baffle.

Thanks everyone!! The chart really helped. It appears that 1/2 inch is the typical expectation for baffle to loft size. Meaning... If I want 3 inch loft then my baffle should be 2-1/2 inches.

If I understand this correctly then I would buy down based on the 3 inches of loft I want not the 2.5 inches of baffle height, correct?

Yes, you need to best approximate the total volume of the object that you are filling with down, so if you are wanting 3", I would suggest using that for your calculations.

That's what I'm planning on doing. So I know the amount of down I will need for my project.
