Hammock newby seeking advice on 'lightest' hammock setup with tarp

    Howdy Folks...

Hows things?! Hope all is well in your camping adventures....

Righto, Ive always been a tent/tarp/ under the stars man....but a mate & I are doing a kayaking expedition which is very space & weight critical (only squeeze stuff into 2 small white water kayaks) & we figured hammocks would be a simpler & less 'gear' option. I've had a quick squiz on the forums etc & while some of this has been covered before, can I grab your EXPERT opinions?!?! The expedition is for a week & in cold/ wet conditions....

    - what in your opinion is the lightest (but still very strong) non bulky hammock on the market at present?
    - What size tarp? 2 of us need to live in these hammocks under a tarp for a week. Thinking a tarp of either 3mx3m or 3mx4m.
    - As a hammock newby, it looks like the whoopie slings are the way to go with tape etc around the tree - right?
    - Any other good tips about how to incorporate 2 hammocks under a tarp?!?

Thanks heaps for your thoughts guys & I look forward to your responses....

    Regards

    Ro bloke.....

The lightest hammock that I know of is the Grand Trunk Nano 7. I have one: very light and compact.

the nano is the lightest other than some diy

tarps size for two bigger is better imo but the 3mx3m will work it might be alittle tight

and i like the 3 tree method with both foot ends on the same tree and the head ends on seperate trees a few feet apart

underquilt in cold weather imo r a must down is compressable(sp?) but needs to be dry. i would go with a synthetic tho

    I'm ultralight kayak camper

Hello, my friend. I'm an ultralight backpacker who does ultralight kayak camping trips too. The others are correct. Grand Trunk Nano 7 is the lightest hammock. Ditch the carabiners that come with it. Use whoopie slings for suspension with 1 inch tree straps, and use a structural ridge line from whoopie slings. You can't get lighter, and it's super comfortable. Not a big hammock though. But I'm 5ft 10 and 150 pounds so for me it is very comfortable. not sure for super tall people though. I use a McCat SpinUl Deluxe tarp with tarp lines made of whoopie sling material. Crazy lightweight. The hammock packs to about the size of a baseball. The tarp is super light but the SpinUl material doesn't scrunch down as tiny as the hammock, so it's probably about the size of a an American football. Personally, I'd rather have my own smaller tarp than share a bigger tarp with another person. But that's just me.

SGT Rock has some post on UL setups ...you should do a search
the Nano 7 is probly the lightest hammock you can find ...
i'm a UL backpacker as well...i made a heavy duty DIY Nano 7 that comes in alittle over 11oz ...

there is lots of great info here ...just got to look for it
It puts the Underquilt on it's hammock ... It does this whenever it gets cold

Here's what I'm using this summer:

Grand Trunk Nano 7 hammock - 4.5 ounces (w/o carabiners)
Mountain Laurel Designs UL Hammock Tarp - 4.4 oz
AmSteel suspension, ridgeline & tree slaps - 2 oz
Gossamer Gear 1/8" Thinlight Insulation Pad - 2 oz
    ...

    Total: 12.9 ounces (.8 pounds) (365.7 grams)

(If you use AmSteel for tree slaps/huggers, make sure to put twigs/sticks between the line and the tree - otherwise there's the potential of hurting the tree)

I guess he could go to Dynaglide whoopies when he gets tired of carrying all that extra weight from the Amsteel
