Tested out the kid's setup with the 1"x5' poles. Holds my 225# just as well. But I think I will stick with the 6' poles. I don't hang as close to the ground and its roomier with the tarp added on. We are so excited for the weekend.

I came across an interesting joint set up for a tripod on a DIY tripod stool website. I was thinking it would work well here instead of lashing, which could slip on slippery poles.

Basically its bolting two poles together with an Eyebolt sandwiched in between which then is bolted to the third pole. The poles are free to swivel outward

I just love brilliantly simple solutions!

I thought about the fiberglass when I ordered mine and guessed that they might be heavier due to thick walls.

I was looking at fiberglass, too, mainly because it's so much cheaper than the aluminum poles. Did some searching and it sounds like fiberglass is marginally heavier. And looking at forums where people have used the fiberglass mast poles as mast poles, it sounds like there are not as robust as the aluminum, particularly at the joins. Still, with each pole being only 2 segments high, it might not be an issue when being used as a stand. But it does not appear to be a weight saving. Just $$$.

I am curious about fiberglass, so I hope someone tries it out. That someone may end up being me. My plan is to get 4 aluminum segments to be used in a two pole stand, but I figure they can also be joined together to be the top pole of a turtlelady stand. The fiberglass might be a suitable for the tripods, and I may have to give that a shot, mainly because I don't have enough opportunities to use a Turtlelady stand to justify the cost of 12 more aluminum segments, but the opportunities that I do have would require it be portable, so the fiberglass with an aluminum top pole might be a good compromise.

I don't know that I will use mine that often, and I ended up with 30 poles total

It's dangerous when I get an idea in my head and it won't go away

Sweet, but not a Turtlelady, tripod stand. Nice to see, though, because the main use I see for a portable stand is the lack of hanging options on the NC coast.

Agree, The lack of Hanging spots on Masenboro Island has been a big problem for us, but this is a good fix. We'll make more sand stakes prior to the next overnight er.

Having been in scouting for many years with my sons, my heart is singing to see these pictures. Thank you for posting them, Artjrk! I bid you and your son many years of comfortable sleeping as you adventure forth spreading the word.

I finally lashed my aluminum canopy supports together today, set them up on my balcony and plan to sleep out tonight with a bright moon and clear skies.

Don't forget a wrap of gaffers tape (or duct tape) at the joints. It lets you move the stand around without a chance for joints to come apart. Of course, once in position and loaded, the tape does nothing.
