I think the "walking" is much more likely if the legs for whatever reason (space constraints, height etc) are not spread as wide as they should be or if there is a lot of sway in the hammock.

The plywood ninja star might not work because it's too thin and so I'm thinking of a shaped repurposed yoga brick. It'll save on weight if not on space....

I've seen some of the 100' variety down near Emory at Clifton and Briarcliff but not much on the north side of town. SIL had some in his backyard in Northcress SD in Chamblee but he no longer lives there. What I've seen s green and you would have to dry it.

I used OldDogs version and purchased 6 - 2x3's and two hinges from Home Depot along with a 10' chain link top rail. I think I've got less than $50 into the stand. Not as elegant as the bamboo stand but it does the job and is much lighter than the other portable stands.

    Re: Walking closed

I have seen this phenomenon on several occasions. If a tripod TIPS toward the center of the hammock, one leg is lifted off the ground and collapses to the center (followed quickly by everything else--including me! ) I think the idea of a ninja star type bracket under the center of the tripod would do the trick. Or maybe a round bracket with three half circles cut in the outer edge to accept each leg. Like a one-gallon paint can top??!? Just spitballing here... .

I solved this problem by rigidly fixing the center pole to the undersides of both tripods, effectively creating a unibody system that doesn't tip. But, still the idea of a ninja star and a fabric-covered tripod is interesting!

You might still get a hold of these: bamboo poles

They seem pretty small, but other, more knowledgeable folks here have said they should be plenty strong. Good luck, Peanuts!

I seem to have solved the walking issue. It turns out my "tripod" was angled farther forward than backward. This led to most of the weight being placed on the front legs, which allows the back leg to move freely. To solve: simply trim off 1/2" at a time from the back leg until the weight is more equally distributed. Furthermore, round bottom of 2x2's to accept rubber feet like shown a few pages back. Should never have the walking issue if you find the "sweet spot" for the weight distribution. I'll try to post pictures soon

Oh yeah! I see them! 1.75" bamboo poles They did not come up when I searched "bamboo" but they come up when I searched "poles"! These will be GREAT for making a TL stand. And they come in sets of three!!

Can't help you with the car, Peanuts. I hope you can get a ride into town to pick up supplies to make your TL stand! Good luck!
