I broke down an made a stand in the olddog mold to use at our scout campout a couple of weeks ago.

I left the poles a little long at about 6'6" I believe and don't know if I will trim more in the future or not.

The stand worked great, but I would prefer to come up with a better tarp solution. This time I used a grand trunk funky forest tarp because it has the smallest ridge line of my tarps. It was really windy the evening before the rain came in and blew down my stands and tarp because the hammock was not weighted. I also learned the hard way that the ridgeline on this tarp is not seam sealed

I tried replacing the boot tarp protectors with tennis balls, but they proved too slick against the tarp in the wind. I may try racquet balls in the future

Thanks to turtlelady and olddog for the inspiration and design!

All is not lost. Some of us just have to wait on opportune times to get bamboo. Mine came over Christmas week trip to South Carolina, where my grandmother planted bamboo on the family farm back in the 30s or 40s. Now there's a couple of acres of the stuff.

It's not often I take my pick-up truck down there, so I cut and loaded a bunch and brought it back to Nashville (by way of the Big South Fork and a family night at Charit Creek Lodge!).

My step-dad said I had to be out of his driveway before sunrise and my wife said no way we could arrive at home before dark! (okay, just kidding) I think my SC family had a pool going on how far up the road I'd make it with my cargo. THEY LOST!!! LOL

Now, got the bamboo. All I need is the time to read 45 pages of thread and to futz around with it my treasure!

I have been making hammock stuff out of green bamboo which I harvest locally. It does go bad quickly. Do plan on making everything twice. Set some out to dry properly. The first green bamboo items will degrade relatively soon. If you set out more bamboo to dry, it may be dry in time to replace the structures you built using the green stuff.

There is lots of good information on the web about curing bamboo.

When I made my stand, I left it long enough to hang my tarp between the two stands allowing me to have my tarp lower in the winter (for bad weather) and higher in the summer (better for sitting in). And the extra length makes it simple to just clip the whoopies into the biners on the ends
