I wanted to lose the ratchet straps supporting my swing set frame style hammock standIMG_1776fl (Medium).jpg, so I took them out, added a third leg to each end and made an oversized turtlelady standIMG_1897 (Medium).JPG.

It seems to work well, but I will have to find a new way to hang a tarp.

    Thanks for the design.

gmctrr -- You are welcome. Your stand is a beautiful example of the concept! I have ridgepole envy. How long is it? It looks long enough to accommodate a tarp.

The straps are connected 15' apart. I get to use my normal suspension. Plenty of room for a tarp.

gmcttr: We must have been sawing sticks at the same time!!!

I tried to make my stand with forest driftwood pieces, but couldn't find enough long and straight ones. I have stick envy! Yours looks great!

Thanks, Turtlelady, for a great design! What I really love about your design is, not just that's it's portable, but that it's easily repeatable. I'm going to make stick stands for all my favorite spots on my property where I haven't been able to hang before. I'll just leave the stands in place and carry a "lounging hammock" with me when I walk in the woods with my cats. Thanks again!

P.S. The ridge pole on this one is an old TV antenna mast!

Pipsissewa, You are very welcome. Yes, it is neat these stands are so easy to make. It seems more folks are figuring out that the Bamboo Stand isn't about bamboo really at all. Perhaps the thread would better titled, Turtlelady's Tri-pod Stand. I wonder if it is too late to go back and do that?

Your antenna ridgepole makes me realize I have a tetherball pole that would make a fine ridgepole. I feel silly not to have thought of that sooner! I love this forum!

That antenna is nicely weathered...I thought it was wood.

I got lucky. Several years back a survey crew clearcut a wide swath of the neighboring property at our common boundary. With tall woods on both sides, the trees that filled in grew tall, straight and fast. A recent drought or ??? killed a few of these providing nicely dried ridgepoles. The absentee owner/corporation doesn't seem to mind a few of these walking off.

I collected two more yesterday. It's always nice to have backups.

Turtlelady...keep the name. The lightness of the bamboo makes our heavy efforts pale in comparison. I WILL find bamboo.

I ate dinner at a Chinese restaurant tonight. They had this wonderful grid of bamboo poles hanging from the ceiling. Oh how I wanted to take some home with me.

I was at a home decorating/accessories store called "Home Goods" recently. They had a bunch of 25 5' bamboo poles for sale at 12.99. That's 50c each, so I'm making a hammock stand as per this thread, and really cheap and super light hiking poles (lighter than carbon fibre I think).

PDA --Wow! Can't wait to see the pictures! Even a picture of the bundle as you bought it would be interesting. I don't usually enjoy shopping home decorating type stores, but I obviously need to check out Home Goods. What was the diameter of the bamboo? Could you gauge the thickness of the bamboo walls before opening the bundle?

Ditto on that! That was a great buy, PDA. Checking prices of bamboo on line, I see it's pretty pricey. You got a super deal there! Can't wait for some pix!!
