I don't know for sure what type of bamboo it is but it looks like bambusa. The base was almost 2" and the other ,end was appx 3/4" so it was young, green and not thick enough on the other end. I sat on the hammock and it just bent and my tripods began falling so I cut it into 2 extra bipod sticks. I now want to experiment with getting a bag of charcoal and try to heat cure them, hopefully that will prevent cracking.
Tim 807 had success with his bamboo crossbar, I see his bamboo was much more mature than then what I had. Hope that helps

Thanks. I'm still a little surprised it failed so readily.

BTW, I am going to try some curing with a flamethrower style weed killing torch.

    Like this puppy...

I'll let you know how it goes...

I was surprised at it bending like that as well. It may have been my lashing, hanging loop, where I put the loop, not sure. I could have tried to trouble shoot the failure but I just figured I would go with the fence rail, I wanted to hang.
I have learned the proper way to lash the tripod so it should be smooth sailing now....

Pipsissewa -- To clarify, my newest stand has aluminum legs, but the ridgepole is steel chain link fence top rail as in my bamboo stand. That is what is shown in the photos posted today.

I did experiment this afternoon with a doubled aluminum ridgepole - that is one aluminum set of poles inside a wider diameter aluminum. It did not work. The compression of my weight sitting gingerly bowed that pole upward enough that I abandoned that trial very quickly.

This newest aluminum set of tri-pods was designed to be mailed to my daughter's home in Portland OR. When I arrive I will buy a top ridgepole and cut it to use as my guest accommodations later in the month and whenever I visit there. I will likely suffer separation anxiety!

I've been following this thread for a little while now, and I'm going to make one of these stands. I think that I can increase the utility by using the tripods like this when the hammock is not in use:

You can use a propane torch to cure bamboo. I did, and it came out great. Smells like ears of corn roasting

I may have to give this a try.....Bamboo grows everywhere here in central FL. For a ridgepole I've got a few aluminum poles for pool cleaning. I wonder if the joint/pole is strong enough on these???

    Thanks for the great ideas

I think I will try the torch method of curing tomorrow. I laid them on the blacktop for around 5 hours today in 92 degree weather and believe it or not they do seem a little more rigid. I had to spray paint the ridgepole OD green though to somewhat match, couldn't take the metal/bamboo look .

The only problem I had with trial #2 is the hammock suspension would slide inward creating alot of slack in the ridgeline. I think if I need to lash the ridgepole better which I think will cure that.
