Well I haven't had time to dig out the paracord (I've not even had enough time to really buy food for nearly two weeks ) but I did take a couple of minutes to warp the fraps tighter and my initial tests indicate no slipping! I'll put together a full report after the holidays, but for anyone building one right now: make those fraps tight!

Would a top rail 1 3/8" work fine? It seems those are significantly cheaper than the 1 5/8" ones I'm finding at Lowes and HD.

Should be fine but FWIW, Lowes also lists 1 5/8" fence rail.

I saw that but didn't want to spend twice as much on the larger size since it only comes in the 21' pieces. They also have a line post in 1 5/8" but I want it in two pieces for portability and I couldn't figure out a good way to connect the two line post pieces. Anyone know if its possible to use a sleeve of some kind on line posts?

Those galvanized fence post sections are flared on one end, so they fit inside each other without the need for any fittings. This is why you should get 2 sections. Cut each section to 1/2 the desired length and then they will go together just fine.

FWIW I got the smaller 1-3/8 pipe and it's plenty strong.

You will see a lot of 13/8" top rail used on these stands. Works fine. Waste is an issue if you are going for, say 14' and haulability (new word?). I now have two 6" lengths with no flare, so I plan to try one of the stands that uses two posts and good ground anchors. If that works for me I will be happy.

When connecting two poles does it matter where that connection is on the length of the pole? For example, would it work to connect a 10' piece with a 2-3' piece or would it be better to have the two pieces closer to the same length like two 6' pieces?
