I toured Home Depot yesterday looking at possible products to use for a stand. Electrical conduit is cheap but I'm not a fan of the look and I'm worried about the strength / weight.
2x2 lumber would probably work, price is great, nice and light, but the HD stuff has joins in a lot of the boards. I fear that would be a likely weak point.
Hemlock dowel was really appealing. It's attractive and lightweight, but expensive. I wouldn't be sure what diameter to buy. I think the 1 5/16 inch might be sufficient, but I have no way of knowing without trying it out.

2 questions. 1. Has anyone seen a website that lists strength of various materials? 2. What is a good length for the cross bar? I want to hang my WBBB from it.

That's what I used, I ended up going for the largest size(1 7/16 inch, is that right? I'm from canada we don't use these inch things) they have, and it only ended up costing me about $100.

I just realized we're both in Edmonton.
Being as the site is mostly Americans, I like to speak their language so as not to be too confusing. That said.. most of the lumber at Home Depot is still listed in that dang 'ol inchy footy system.

Turtlelady, I don't have any pics except for this thread where I use a bamboo tripod as a second tree.

In that case I don't use a ridge pole, but a tie out opposite the hammock. I seem to always be able to find at least one tree...

I think I'm going to go with the 2 x 2 stuff being it is so inexpensive. I am sure strength wont be an issue and it should lash together just fine. The pressure treated stuff costs about $2.50 an 8' length, I am thinking going 6'6" on the length of the poles. I'm hoping to make it for under $40.00

What do you plan to use for your ridge pole?

I may spring the cash on the 10' 1" 7/8 dowel rod I saw at lowes, I think they run about 14 bucks. I am sure it was strong enough but I am not sure if 10" would be long enough

I'm leaning toward the fence post top since it's easy to make it 2 piece. I want my stand easily transportable. I don't know how one would safely join to pieces of dowel into one long piece.

Good point! I just dont like the look of metal, maybe rattle-can it with some OD or coyote brown paint...

Will 6' poles at about a 10' distance be high enough to get the bottom of the hammock 15" off the ground when sitting on it???

With a 12" piece of a snug fitting pipe used as a sleeve. The load is all end-to-end in compression. The only side load is from the weight of the pole itself.
