    Insect mesh problem

Hi, im new to the forum so hello too all, im from Belfast in Northern Ireland.

i plan on making a double layer ripstop nylon hammock (like a dd hammock) with the two layers sealed by velcro tabs at intervals along one side and sewn on the other and at each end, i also intend on adding the asym guy out/stablization points like on the Hennessy hammock. I would also like to make a removable insect net much the same as the one on the dd travel hammock but am undecided as to how to attach it to the hammock so that it is easily removable, using zips seems a more expensive (im trying to make the whole thing for alot less than the dd model) solution and im struggling to find zips long enough. Would velcro work? would i have issues sewing this? as in parts i will have to sew through two layers of velcro and fabric where i encounter hem, and the velcro for the netting and the velcro joining the two ripstop nylon layers.

    Any help greatly appreciated

    Peter

I tried velcro with the net...didn't like it.
The velcro would snag on the net, it was a pain to close, having to squeeze the parts together. NOISEY. Rippppp to open.
Seemed like a solution at the time, but it didn't work.
I ended up going with a zip. Cost me twice.

Just draped ove the ridge line works for. I would have bet it would never keep the bugs out but it does just fine - and I only have to lift it to get in and out.

that zip stuff by the meter can you add the little thing that enables you to zip it right off and on again? the little silver thing at the end of this zip:

i looked for a drap over net but they seem very expensive even just for the fabric in the uk, im trying to make the whole thing for as little as possible

To do that you'll need a set length zip,the coil zips are for sewing in.

Hey Peter! Welcome to another european hanger! We are growing here !
You might want to check Martin's store at extremtextil.de to get a zipper that fits your needs.

Best of luck for your DIY-project!

Hey .... I made one with velcro a while back ....looking for lightweight at the time. Velcro was not difficult at all to sew .... just go easy.

On my bridge Hammock I went with a Grizz and Hangout hybrid .... it just hangs into the hammock. The green panels are ripstop nylon to extend the bug-ney and give a wee bit of weight.

My first diy had a simple drap over the ridgeline with holes to pull through my asym tie out lines. I just finished a new one, i canabalized the zipper off of an old sleepingbag for a zip up on one side. I think I destroy more gear than I make heh heh.
