    Just Ordered a DAM

I just ordered an Exped 9 DLX from www.moosejaw.com. They have a 20% off sale going on right now. Turned this $170 pad into $136 with free shipping!! Gotta love sales
    Peace,

Do you have the Exped 7 Short, or regular? I am 5' 10", and I need a pad for my Claytor Jungle. I *could* use the short (120cm long) if I lie on my side and bend-ze-knees, and I am tempted by the Short as it is smaller and lighter (for packing), but I don't know if I will regret it. Your comments and opinions would be interesting and welcome.

i have the exped 7 regular (full length), but at times i've thought if i might do well w/ a short... especially since some of the others have been talking about using short under quilts & ccf pad under the legs.
in addition to the weight savings, it might eliminate the need for a pillow under my knees when laying on my back because my would drop several inches lower off the short DAM.

When I was a ground dweller, I used a 3/4 length pad all the time. I would just throw my jacket under my legs and all was well. I'm not sure that would work as well in a hammock. But now that I think about it, I've heard of some using their empty pack for the same purpose.

I ordered the DLX version to get the 26" width. I'm hoping that it will be wide enough to keep me away from the sides.
    Peace,
    Joe

I've found that it is just wide enough if I lay still, centered, and maybe my arms on top of my body. I still like to have some more coverage up around my sides though. YMMV.

I was thinking that I could hang my JRB Nest underneath. That would give some additional side coverage. I would use my homemade ORM clone as a top quilt. With a travel pod and appropriate clothing, I would think temps in the teens would be realistic.

Yep, I did almost exactly that the other night, save that the Nest was doubled back, temps hit 3 degrees F. Yesterday evening I lay out in the hammock for about an hour at 7 degrees F, with just the doubled back Nest and a doubled over pad for the legs. Took about 10 minutes to warm up, but once there it was solid.

Tried the same thing this morning at 2 degrees F and was right on the edge as far as the upper body went. The cold spots went away, but the warm spots didn't come

With your proposed setup I think you're good.

Anyone have an opinion as to whether to get the DAM 7 or the DAM 9?

I went for the DLX due to the width. I believe that the 7 and the 9 are the same width, (20") where the DLX models are 26". The only difference between the regular 7s and 9s is the thickness. The 9 is about 3/4" thicker. That gives the 9 an 8 R factor vs 5.8 for the 7. If I could have found it, I prolly would have bought a 7 DLX, but got a good price on the 9 DLX, so it's all good.
    Peace,
    Joe
