1/32” PE – foam UC testing

I'm having trouble sewing PE foam by itself. Pleats/darts are a problem, unless you have some nylon to hold it together; otherwise, the foam won't feed through the machine and it'll rip. I suppose that is one benefit of the scrim found on IX.

I have access to a bunch of 1/32" PE foam, 18"x whatever" strips, perforated every 20" and I would love to be able to make an effective underquilt, pad, etc. My concern is that simply creating a nylon-PE-nylon sandwich may not provide the air space needed for this foam to be an effective insulator.

Is weaving the strips and quilting 6" squares in this sandwich a viable UC/pad solution? I’m not sure, but it at least provides some durability/breathability.

Has anyone else successfully sewn this material without any “scrim”?

I would appreciate any comments or suggestions.

If you put your mouth up against it can you blow through it at all?

If you put it over a bowl and pool water on it will it eventually seep through?

If not it is likely a pretty good vapor barrier and may cause major condensation issues.

You can blow through it and it seeps water easily, but only because of the holes made by stitching, hence the reason for the quilting.

Why not buy some scrim and baste it to the PE, effectively making your own IX?

rjcress - That would definitely work. I was hoping to avoid purchasing scrim, but it may be inevitable?
