IYO what to do with 2.5# 900+ loft down

What would you do with 2.5# of 900+ loft down.

I have a snowlion -40 expedition bag from the 70s.
10" loft, 6 top 4 bottom V baffles, double YKK zippers the whole works.
I bought it new.

It has deflated to 8" in the legs but the body area is still 10" and
from the early 80's on I never really used it.

Reason it has to be 900+ down is the shell is old school 1.9 oz ripstop, has snaps for the neck collar and the old style YKK zippers so the shell is pretty heavy by todays standards and this was a top of the line bag in the late 70's and cost $500 back then. Weighs 4# even without the collar.

At any rate I was thinking about maybe salvaging the down and build maybe some pertex or momentum shelled stuff. Epic would be nice, but from what I understand not available to the public.

Now the caveat is I have worked with down several times and hate it.
So much so I just cant bring myself to chop it up

I would much rather work with Climashield and I already have a golite ultra 20.

So I could...

1 sell it
2 sell the down
3 chop it up and suffer through construction of whatever, GAK
4 move to Alaska where I can actually get some use out of it.

I am leaning towards #4

Alaska is awesome!
However if it were my list, it would end at option #3, and not include the move to alaska option at all.
Given that you hate working with down, I'd say #1 is the ticket for you.
You'll probably have a line of people lining up to put "dibs" on your down.

Funny I had it up for sale several times recently and cheap too like $175.
One guy low balled me at $150 and I turned him down.

Think people are scared of it since it is old.

I figure 40 oz of 900 down (if you can even find it) at $10 per ounce is like $400
just for the down.

Interestingly adjusted for inflation, this bag would cost - $1740 in todays $

I doubt it's 900+. Probably 650-700 for a bag of that vintage that says 'high loft'. You can recover the lost loft by washing it properly. I just finished making a winter UQ from salvaged sleeping bag down (Gerry's and a High Sierra). Final weight was 2lbs and change, so it was probably about 650 average fill power. A high-loft down bag that old, in good shape goes for between $50 and $150 depending on how much it cost originally.

Maybe but I doubt it was that low not with a 1.9oz ripstop shell with the old style double YKK zippers coming in at 4#.
I would be curious to know though.

I am just basing my guess on the fact that most current 850 fill -40dF bags made with somewhat lighter materials and zippers are about the same weight or more.

Since there seems to be a gap between how you value the bag and how others value it. I'd say your best off to bite the bullet and make something out of it.

By comparison, one can get brand new 800+ fp down from Stormcrow for $6.50/oz, and have none of the hassle of getting the down out of your old bag. Also no risk that the down has suffered over the years or picked up anything nasty like smells or mold.
40oz from Stormcrow is $260.

Personally, I would consider $150 to be a very generous offer, not a low-ball offer.

Yeah I probably should have sold it to him at $150, but I am somewhat attached to it.
It saved me from hypothermia one time in Colorado.
