Buying a hammock from walmart hammock for $8 to see if I like hammock camping

I want to buy a hammock at walmart to see if I like hammock camping. It is made of the woven cords, and so it is not ideal, but it is cheap and readily available and I'm going tomorrow night. Another option would be to buy a hammock from REI and then return it, because I know that I want a Tom Claytor Jungle Hammock in the future. What do you think?

another option is to browse the for sale forum and see what is available. If you don't like it you can always sell it here

Buying something and planning to use it and then return it is just wrong, even if it is the Evil Empire we're talking about. Don't do it.

...and buying an $8 hammock from Wal-Mart to see if you might like sleeping in $150 hammock is like test driving a Fiesta before you buy a Camaro.

IMO You won't get any kind of idea of how you like hammocking in a walmart woven hammock. Check out amazon or Gazzos outdoors. You should be able grab one for around 20 bucks.

This is the one I am using from Wal-mart with great success. Very sturdy material. I have modified it a bit by removing the rope at the ends and re-whipping it per instructions found right on this forum for a flatter lay.

Is REI or Walmart the evil empire? Regardless, I would go ahead and buy the good stuff with the intentions of keeping it and if it doesn't work out then return it or sell it here. REI wouldn't have the policy if they thought it would hurt them. I wouldn't think anything less of you.

I agree that this will not give you a good idea about how a camping hammock will truly be. The design, materials, and everything are very different. I can sympathize with going cheap first though. Just dont let the wal-mart hammock sour you on the whole thing. Find a group hang in your area and attend. I am sure that people will let you try their hammocks out, and you will get a true impression without the risk. I know that there is quite a few hangers in your area.

Try it out now that you have it, but keep in mind what the others have said...you can't judge a Harley by riding a moped, and a woven $8 hammock won't tell you what a Warbonnet or Hennessy feels like any more than a Prius will feel like a Ferrari. But you'll get an idea of what it's like.

Curious why you're set on a Claytor if you haven't tried anything else yet, though. What's up?
