    Can you get the swing...

... if you run your tarp over your structural ridge line?

With my current rig I run my tarp over a line separate from my hammock as is common. I do this because I like to swing and sway a bit in my hammock heck, sometimes I'll even find a stick that I can push with. With the tarp and hammock independent of one another this is possible.

With rigs where the hammock and tarp are integral, is it possible to swing a bit? When you're wriggling about in such a rig, how are your tarp pegs not pulled free?

    Shock cords?
Does the ridge line just sorta "roll" underneath the tarp?
Or is it just not an issue?

I'd really like to simplify my setup by running my tarp over a structural ridge line.

    Thanks

Play around with it, see if it works for you.

The usual issue is as you sit in the hammock the ridgeline sags and changes the pitch of the tarp.
But your correct, shockcord is the key, both on the tarp ridge and tieouts.

For me, I like the versatility of altering the tarp height for varying weather conditions.

I had a HH years ago who's tarp connected to the SRL. The tie outs for the tarp were not shock cord, but the side tie outs for the hammock were. The instructions on the HH bag said to run the hammock side tie outs to the tarp. This was due to the relatively small size of the tarp, and was to ensure you remained underneath the tarp, I guess.

I was swinging gently in my hammock, as your proposed, and ripped the taught tarp line off the tarp. I then had to run the shock cord from the hammock through a loop in the tarp and down to tie it out, so it was now my side tie out and tarp line. It worked, but irritated me when I considered the whole set up. I needed something better, but just got frustrated.

This, and a few other reasons caused me to give up hammocking, until recently. This forum helped me understand a hammock set up much better, which I now have been enjoying very much. My tarp will always remain on a separate line from my hammock, always.

I've used HH, Mosquito, ENO and now WBBB hammocks. With the exception of the HH, they all had separately hung tarps, but never had a problem with swinging, including the HH with it's integral tarp. Not sure why Joe had a problem. You need to be aware that regular on purpose swinging will wear out the suspension lines a lot faster and if you're not careful can land you on the ground. I don't think you'll have a problem if you alter your suspension lines by attaching them to the main suspension.

I had a problem because the set up was wrong. This was several years ago, before the "Shug videos" learned me!
