    DIY weight savings?

I'm sure there's a thread for this, but I haven't found it yet.

I have a GT single which weighs in at right at 1 lb. I was thinking of replacing it with a DIY gathered end, made from 3yds. of whatever ripstop I could find locally. but I thought I'd ask you all if you thought I'd have any weight/bulk savings.

    Thoughts? Thanks!

The Grand Trunk listed dimensions are 10.5' x 5'. That's 5.83 sq yards of fabric. Parachute nylon used in these hammocks is close to the same weight as 1.9 oz/sq yd ripstop, which isn't really 1.9 when you get down to it but something closer to 2.0 or 2.1 oz/sq yd to account for the DWR.

If you make a hammock the same size as your single, the fabric weights will be pretty similar. You can shed some weight from your single though by

    - cut off the stuff bag. Me I'd leave it on, but if you are gram conscious...
    - replace the suspension with some Dynaglide.

Folks around here are fond of whoopie slings, but I don't mind making knots so my cords are simpler, and attach to 1" polyester webbing straps that run about 1 oz each.

The S-biners that the GT stuff I've seen come with are really heavy and the straps used are also heavy. So I'd look to change the suspension first, for the biggest weight/bulk savings.

I think you can definitely save weight with a DIY, especially if you really only use 3 yards of fabric. If weight really is your main concern, though, I would order it online. For one, it will be a lighter fabric than what you can most likely find in the fabric store. I have only seen 1.9 ounce per yard ripstop personally, whereas if you order it, you can get 1.1 ounce per yard.

I have had really good experiences with ordering from backwoods daydreamer.com if you decide to go that route.
