WA Coast Hang and Spring Clean weeked of April 23rd

    Ground dwellers welcome too!

Every year the http://www.coastsavers.org/washington.html put on a clean up day for the entire Washington coast! This year its April 23rd. Last year 1000 beach coming volunteers pulled 16 tons of trash off the beaches!

Last year i gathered this off of Shi Shi beach in about 20 minutes.

So lets have a hang out at Shi Shi. Why Shi Shi? In 2003 the travel channel named it on its top 10 nature beaches.

    http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&sour...h&z=14&layer=t

Also i'm not opposed to camping at http://www.hobuckbeachresort.com/ It is a nice campground plenty of trees to hang. The Sufrider foundation sets up a BBQ at Hobuck.

    So who's interested.

I also have a post for this at http://www.nwhikers.net/forums/viewt...=687572#687572

Service is always great, I'm totally in, as long as nothing important comes up in between (family emergencies or similar). If there are enough for sure's, anyone want to try a carpool?

I have been to Shi Shi once, if you've never been before, its not to be missed!
You don't sleep on the ground at home, why would you expect me to out here?

Carpooling would be great it's a loooong drive from puget-troplis....i know it won't necessarily be possible for everyone.
Probably a bit early for organizing a car pool, need to see who drops out or who else decides to join.

    Hey Hulk,

When I did Shi Shi it was a 4-5 mile hike, I do remember seeing some access roads, but how far are we walking to get the trash out and back to the cars? I'm kinda hoping you are gonna tell me there is a special arrangement. I don't think the bog section is gonna be too friendly this time of year.

So the trail is 4 miles round trip, not much elevation change, except for the a short bluff to above the beach. The first half of the trail is in great shape....second half is located on an abandoned road, and is a muck hole. It's the Washington coast....yer gonna get wet.

There will be a dumpster at the trail head. I have a Dixon roller pack that will help, i suspect ol tried and true garbage bags tied to a piece of drift wood might still be one of the most efficient methods. Remember it's stuff that washed up on the beach, its mostly stuff that floats.

I have the ear so to speak of a member of Friends of Olympic National park, which is a member of the Coast Alliance. So i did try to make some special arrangements. Normally overnight parking is not allowed at the trail head...for volunteers of the cleanup event will be allowed to park at the trail head over night with a special permit. The special permit will be available at the Makah tribal center.
The other thing i pushed is allowing a skiff to land on the beach to haul collected trash off the beach. Not going to happen. There's some liability issues with that.

Oh and i should mention a hard sided container is required for food storage while on the beach. Could be a bear can, or say a bucket with a lid that snaps shut, even Tupperware. The idea is to keep critters like raccoons, otters, gulls, and ravens out of the food stash.

I'm in for whatever basically, its your deal, so, what did you have in mind for camping arrangements? As far as times and locations?

Were you thinking camp Fri night? or camp Sat night? Each brings its own possibilities. Mostly I'm wondering if you wanna camp at a site at the beach, i know there are some really good ones. Or if you wanna camp at the trail head and day hike in and back. Or maybe you were thinking Fri and Sat.
Sorry, not trying to be a pain, but I made the mistake of asking myself one question, then all these other logistics came into play. If I'm getting ahead of you thats totally fine. I just got excited is all.
