Cuben Tarps: Who's useing them.

What seams would you need to seal and what do you use to seal them?

So why is spin so much popular then cuben if cuben is lighter and not all that much more expensive. Has it just not blown up on the HF scene yet or and still flying under the radar.

1. Spinn has been around longer than cuben. People are comfortable with Spinn. It's lighter than sil, not as expensive as cuben, but has the wonderful non-stretch characteristic that cuben has.

2. Joining cuben panels involves bonding. Sewing can be problematic in cuben. Most of us just crawled out of the woods and are still mastering the thread injector. Now, we have to learn the chemical properties of bonding agents. Now we have to ask ourselves, "Will my bonded seam turn to dust in the middle of the night?" If we chose to sew cuben, we will ask ourselves, "Will my line of stitches cause a catostophic rip when loaded?" Basically, fear of the unknown, exasperated by the high price of materials with potential project failure.

3. For certain projects, the width of raw materials becomes a factor. I've had silnylon as wide as 67", whereas Spinn is more narrow at 57" and cuben is more narrow still at 54".

All that being said, I wish I were more confident in my cuben bonding skills and everything I made would be in cuben. That is my goal, but I'm not there quite yet.

I really like that design that you are using LRR. Do you mind if I ask what he is charging you for it? Everytime I get on here I find something else I want. I think I may order one of these on Friday.

they gave me seam sealer with tarp. seam is on ridge so i did not seam. the odds of a leak from ridge is not something i want to add chemicals to.

But I paid a painful $285 but remember my tarp is a lot of cuben and a custom design that he does not stock. What can I say I like big tarps . I think Ill call this tarp ZBWWD

Those tarps look great! I can't wait to get mine. Almost got enough put back. I love that design lazy river. I was originally thinking of going with the 8.8 x 11, but have been kind of worried and confused about tie out points. I'd like to be able to close doors if need be and flip doors in as if it were a hex. I'm worried the with a rectangle the doors either won't close all the way, or if they did have the ample space needed with tie outs it would make the hex option very small. I wish I could explain this better. Sgt rock seems to have it down with his rectangle but its 9' x 7'. So I've been kicking around the idea of the bwdd winter dream style. I love how yours has diagnal angles to it, I didn't think the winter dream had that.

Sorry for rambling on, I just can't get the tie out points right in my head for effective doors and effective hex.

What does the seam look like?? Is it folded and then sewn like we'd normally do with our nylon tarps???

Only had 2 nights tested so far during my thru hike of the LI Greenbelt Trail (measly 33 miles)

You need to come up to Western Mass and try the Taconic Crest Trail. Its only 35 miles but it is one He** of a roller coaster for terrain.
