could i add the JRB Replacement Spreader Bar (single bar) to both ends and make it into a true lay flat hammock?
if so what is the best way to add them?

so that the edges of the hammock carry the weight (in a gathered end hammock it is carried down the center of the hammock) and the middle portion of the body is narrower than the ends in order to "pull up" the middle. It's the pulling up that makes a flat lay.
Some people use a spreader bar at the head end of a gathered end hammock to make it a little wider around the head and shoulders, but that doesn't make a flat lay.

What might work- is to embed in the sides of the hammock the same sort of webbing we use building bridge hammocks from scratch. Fold it into the fabric in the required arc and sew it down. Then you could put spreader bars at each end. Since the bugnetting on yours is big and loose it would probably not be horribly affected by this.
Of course, in trying one might turn a perfectly useable hammock into a perfectly unuseable one
People do sell used JRB BMBH hammocks here. Sometimes they sell ones I've built for them (but I like to think they stay put with loving owners).
