My crazy hiking buddy (everybody's got one) decided to try this rock trick years ago. He drug a big chunk of quartz/granite out of the edge of the campfire, rolled it in an old sweatshirt, and crammed it in the bottom of his bag.

We awoke in the morning and he was smiling from ear to ear gloating about how warm he slept. This was until he drug the bundle from the bag bottom. He unrolled the old sweatshirt to discover he hadn't got every ember brushed away before rolling it up. The shirt looked like someone had hit him point blank with a shotgun.....Ooops....

Love it! Saw it right off, too many coals(or not enough dirt?) Loved it when I saw it at the theaters in ~ 1975. I have seen it many times over the years.

I never dreamed that one day I would become very familiar with the very spot where many of the winter shots were filmed, but I did. Robert Redford bought the land in Utah where he was trying to sleep on those coals. It became Sundance Ski Resort and Film Institute. I skied there a lot when I lived in Utah, as well as playing around the rivers and lakes on other trips. I have skied most western places in North America, and I always considered Sundance MAYBE most beautiful. And when you get off the lift at the top, you can go have coffee and a bearclaw pastry in the Bearclaw Restaraunt! With pictures all over the walls from making the movie.

When I watch the movie these days, I can always easily recognize much of the scenery. It is spectacular by any standards. Mt. Timpanogos, with Provo, UT and Utah Lake ~ 7000 feet below on the west side and Sundance and Deer Creek Res on the East.

I liked the movie but thought Redfords lines were a little stiff. A case of a modern sophisticant trying to sound like an olde time guy. Truly listen to him talk and then listen to everyone else in the movie, he's stiff. Kinda like he got out of his trailer walked up and said to himself, how does a hick sound? If he had redone his character from Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid it would have been better. Like that movie too.

The only thing I can think of besides the obvious 'you've got a fire in your tarp and you're hanging over it' idea is, even though your in a breazy environment you still are going to have a massive amount of Co2 coming up from your bed of coals. I wouldn't want to be a warm corpse. Be careful.
