Jerimiah Johnson and the hot coals technique

I was watching this movie the other day 'Jerimiah Johnson' and I had to wonder if this old timey technique would work for a hammock.

Basically hot coals are buried beneath a thin layer of dirt and the you sleep on it. I know nylon and fire do not mix but in a survival situation I'd rather be two feet off the coals rather than on them.

i was on a fishing trip with my uncle once when he thought he had a great idea, same as yours. he used one of those early full length longe chairs that hinged at the both ends for your head and feet. the material was that plastic tubing woven around a steel frame....he lasted about 2 hours until the material heated so much he melted through and burnt his arrrz

I love it that he tried! In the movie Jerimiah burned his arse and his mentor didn't. It was all in the technique.

Saw it right off... Man I like that movie!
My knife is so sharp it cut the sixth finger off my right hand! On the plus side, Inigo Montoya no longer hunts me.

Bringing the rocks that ring your campfire into your shelter works and doesn't require any digging. Of course, care needs to be used so the rocks don't explode but, it's the same care a body should use in choosing fire-ring rocks anyways.

That movie is one of the classics, IMO!
Thanks for the memory ... now I've got to go rent it!

One of my very, very, very favorite movies. In fact, back in the old-timey days when DVDs first came out, it was my very first movie purchased on DVD.

Hmmm......I wonder if it's available in BluRay yet? Anyway, I still watch it at least once a year. Even put it on my iPhone so I can watch in on long sleepless nights in the woods.

The road goes ever on and on Down from the door where it began. Now far ahead the Road has gone, And I must follow, if I can, Pursuing it with weary feet, Until it joins some larger way, Where many paths and errands meet. And whither then? I cannot say.
