I've never been to the office in Troy!

I have a topo from a topo-printing-kiosk at Great Outdoor Provision Company (no kiosks remain). Also, see pages 192-221 of the "UWharrie Lakes Region Trail Guide" by Don Childrey ...excellent sketches and descriptions.

    Hey charley,

The office in troy is about 3 miles from my house. They have small maps available for free of the uwharrie trails. But mostly of the main part of the forest near badin lake. The one for birkhead isn't that great, if you would like I could bring a hand full for anyone who would like. Just let me know, its prob 25min from the birkhead trail head to the troy ranger office.

Well you guys and gals have a great time and post a lot of pictures.

I kept trying to un-bury my weekend schedule to make it to this hang, but was spectacularly unsuccessful. I'll be selling Girl Scout cookies instead, and running the Dad Taxi. I was hoping the Dad Taxi would be able to make a run to the Birkheads, but it was just not meant to be.

That would be nice and would save me from hunting for the office. Thanks.

I was hoping you'd get to make it. Gonna be a nice day/weekend weather wise. We'll catch up at the next one!

Looking forward to exploring the Birkheads a little. Never been there. Gonna be 5 in my party alone. 3 men and 2 women. Should be a pretty good turnout.

I still haven't given up, but this danged chest cold still hasn't cleared enough for me to feel comfortable hiking.
Optimistic that by morning I'll feel better and be able to join the group at the departure point... just not sure that my optimism is justified.

I haven't been to Birkhead before. What kind of trail is it? Much elevation change? Very steep and/or rugged?
If it is a pretty easy hike, I'm likely OK. Just not sure I'm up to much up and down steep inclines.
