Birkhead Mountains NC Short Hang 2/26-27

A few of us local peidmont hangers are planning a one night hang in the Birkhead Mountain Wilderness on February 26-27. We will start at the Robbins Branch Trailhead and set up camp around Hannah's Creek, 1-2 miles in. You can hike most of the 7 mile loop and meet at camp, or you can take the shorter way in. Attached is more information on the trails. http://www.northcarolinaoutdoors.com.../birkhead.html

All area hangers are welcome to come and hang out with us. This will be a good time to try out that gear and meet new people! Please post if you are interested.

    More details will follow!

I'm interested. I'll have to see how the work schedule works out.

Sounds good Mac! Any ideas on a perfect location to set camp besides Hannahs Creek?

So far there are 6 hangers and a couple of ground dwellers planning to go.

I know several very nice places, both high and low.

    1) go north from the parking lot, take the right fork and follow Hannah's Creek trail... after the second creek crossing take a trail to the left that leads up to the top of a peak and ridge. There is a plateau up there that appears to be an old homestead. Nice place to hang!

    2) Continue along the ridge trail from 1) and turn south when it tees into a north-south trail (north takes you to the Birkhead Trail). Shortly you will come to a peak that stands above the east end of the Hannah's Creek Trail. There is a nice camp site on that peak, with a great overlook.

    3) take the Birkhead Trail south from Hannah's Creek trail, across Hanah's creek, to the ridge right in the SE corner of the Wilderness Area. That ridge is a wonderful place to hang. One of the three peaks appears to be a caldera. Great hanging up there!

    4) take the Birkhead Trail north from the east end of Hannah's Creek Trail, all the way north to just past where the Robbins Branch Trail comes in. There's a nice, high campsite there, and another east along the trail that goes toward Cedar Rock Mountain.

    5) ...go east toward Cedar Rock Mountain, and find a trail that branches off to the north. Where it meets Betty McGee Creek (yes, that creek nearly circumnavigates the Birkhead Mtns) at the foot of Cedar Rock Mtn is a wonderful valley where I have camped often.

    6) Back to the Robbins Branch parking lot... go north from there, and before you reach the fork where you find Hannah's Creek Trail, another trail goes off to the left. That trail leads to some very nice areas down low, along the creek just west of the ridge on which Robbins Branch Trail runs. About halfway to Thornburg Farm, there is a particularly beautiful area.

    7) Take Robbins Branch Trail north to just south of where the Thornburg Trail comes in. There is a rocky slide area that you can take down to Robbins Branch Creek. Cross the creek, and you will find a trail that heads straight up the hill alongside an aqueduct or stone paved ditch. Nice camping up top.

    8) Take Robbins Branch Trail north to just north of where the Thornburg Trail comes in. There is a nice camp site by the Robbins Branch Creek.

There are several other great places to camp. You can camp anywhere, of course.

I believe it is worth hiking the Birkheads. It's easy walking and the scenery changes a lot. You find all kinds of ancient wagon roads that aren't on any map.

I'd like to join you if it works out for me, but I'll have to see how things look as we get closer.
