Just to clarify a little with pictures...

Some pics of test1 where height of bipods was determined to be too small. I ended up on the ground. The jeep was one anchor, a tree was the other since my stake attempts failed.

Test2 used trees as anchors to test the minimum gap between bipods where I would not bottom out. This gap was about 98" and the DN is hooked directly to the eyebolts.

James, I believe you and I are re-inventing

    the same wheel!

And wow, I do like that commercially made system. Considering the material (SS) and teh "completeness" of the system the price is not too unreasonable. The break-down feature is nice too.

For my bipods I am using 6'-8" sections of aluminum strut that cost me $20 apiece. Carrying the bipods is a bit of a hassle, but as I just use them for car camping they get strapped to my roofrack along with my canoe or kayak.

    Jim,

I looked at the commercial system but shipping was as much as the acutal product.

Are you hanging a tarp from your ridgeline between the bipods?

    I have in the past

but I am looking to drape it over the peaks as I have recently bought a WB Superfly. Not really sure how that will work out.

One problem I had was keeping the tarp ridgeline snug - When I weighted the hammock, the bipods leaned in and the tarp slackened. But if I can pad the bipod peaks and attach teh tarp ridgeline to the stake system there could be movement while the tarp stayed tight.

    Many tests to run.....

Good to know that I wasn't the only one with that problem. I think I found a solution though...........bungee cord. Tarp to the fixed point on the bipods, seemed that if I had everything else tight that the bungee would take up the slack in the ridge.

There is a 1885 patent that drives the bipod into the ground and uses a roller built into the bipod to pass through the hammock rope directly to the stake. I always wondered why the roller and passing through the hammock rope. Now I think I see why they did that.

    Thanks Youngblood.

That gives me another idea. I was going to use a triangular screw link for that purpose, or maybe just a carabiner.

There is such a thing as an eye nut...think eye bolt, only a nut. They aren't widely available, and are right spendy. I made mine by opening up a link of chain and welding it to a nut.The amsteel ridgeline and the hammock suspension affix to eye bolts at the apex of the bipods and the support lines attach to the eye nuts. The stakes are rebar.

Mike is on the money...shock cord keeps the tarp tight.

With two trees this whole production is so much easier.
