Planning a trip to World's End

So a bunch of my buddies are getting our first fall trip of the year together and we've decided on World's End State Park. They have designated camping areas and I'm just wondering if I should call ahead and tell them that I'll be hanging my tent in the air between two trees or if I should just go and hope no one bothers me? What's your experience with the patience and understanding of park rangers towards our beloved hobby?

Always a good idea to check ahead of time with paid campsites. Some have restrictions against tying anything to trees, to include hammocks.

I visited Worlds End several years ago. Family get together picnic of sort. Excellent swimming hole there - of course it was summer time and all. The Loyal Sock trail goes through there. If Worlds End doesn't allow you to hang your hammocks you may want to consider a short hike out on the Loyal Sock Trail for a hang.

I've stayed in worlds end before in a hammock, they didn't seem to mind. Then again, it was the weekend of the bow festival and may have had more important things to worry about.

You need seek no rocky summit, for these high places are within you.

The PA state parks have limits as to the number of structures (tents) that can be set up on any one campsite as well as the number of people allowed on each. I think the tents is 2 and the people are six. But I could be wrong with those numbers. Given a one person per hammock ratio you might need more than one site. World's End is a very nice area. Very hilly with steep canyon walls in some areas.

If you decide to hit the Loyalsock trail instead of staying in the park you will need to pay attention tot he park boundaries. There is _NO_ camping on Park land except for designated sites. That is strictly enforced and can be quite costly. The State Forest requires permits [free and easy to obtain] for camping on the Loyalsock for any size party. This is particularly true for more than one night stays in the same place. Given budget cutbacks the likelihood of running into a Forest patrol is a crap shoot unless you happen to choose a known party place.
