It was a beautiful sight. He was comfortable in that at (almost) 0 degrees, and (absolutely) high winds!
It could be that the purpose of my life is merely to serve as a warning to others.
When I used your Hammock Sock on Roan with you back in December in all that wind it blocked the wind beautifully. My tarp is a wing cut type and doesn't block the wind too much, or the snow when it's blowing sideways. I awoke to a snow incrusted sock and was very dry inside! It really sold me!
I have a full coverage tarp now that closes up completely and can go all the way to the ground...but unless it's warmer and raining, I'm wondering if I'd need it with the sock and just take my smaller tarp!? I'm going to Virgin Falls this weekend with friends for an overnight backpack trip and I'm torn on which tarp to take.

I want to go!!!!!
I'd love to do some hanging in snow - the most I have seen here is either ice, powder or slush.
I really do like the look of that canvas sock as well. If temps stay below freezing the tarp may not be necessary.
I guess that sock needs to go on my "I don't have that... yet" list
Nice report, Mac. Thanks!

I didn't miss the tarp the second night at all and the hammock sock is fairly aerodynamic. I did have the ends where the support lines go through bungied tight.
The only thing I want to do to my mac-sock is add some velcro tabs periodically along the SEEP sides. I have a lot of weight in the pockets to keep the SEEP closed in those winds but the windward side ruffled a wee bit-nothing like the tarp though and that MacCat Ultra was strung tight in the beginning-just after 18 hours of non stop 20 and the 40+ bommer hitting every 15 or 20 minutes even it got slack.
I'd reckon FOR ME the preferred material for this type of sock would be the high end Pertex which is waterproof and breathable.....I just don't think I get out enough times a year in sub 20F to justify the canvas model....speaking of, what is the weight of the canvas sock??? Inquiring minds want to know or maybe I missed it.
Mac's sock did blend in. I think a lot of the true snow camo has spots in it doesn't it? There was another tarp at RHK that blended in which suprised me because it was a lightish woodland camo type pattern.
Back to socks. I did get some condensate on top of my TQ from the breath freezing--not enough to worry about and still cold enough inside that it didn't wet out the quilt.
