Canvas Sock at 2*F, high winds, no tarp, min UQ/TQ,

Last Friday night at 6300' on Roan High Knob, the low temp was 2*F, and there were strong, gusty winds. I hung in my Speer hammock, with Speer Snugfit, Speer Top Blanket, Molly Mac Gear Canvas Hammock Sock (not insulated)... and no tarp.

FourDog hung with no tarp over his Molly Mac Gear Canvas Hammock Sock in MN at -15*F, but the winds were light. I had a Speer Witner Tarp with me, just in case, which I was thinking of hanging as a one-sided wind break.

Darby looked at me like I was crazy when I told him what I was using for insulation, and that I did not rig my tarp! (The ratings for the Snugfit and Top Blanket is in the 20s.)

I was toasty! It's amazing what a lightweight, windproof, breathable, canvas hammock sock can do in cold weather!

You're killing me, Mac! I've had my eye on this device since you guys started talking about it.

How well does it work with a Switchback?

This afternoon, Darby and I were discussing the details of a mod that makes all Molly Mac Gear Hammock Socks work with a Switchback or Light Hiker. Instead of threading the hammock through the sock ends, you'll just velcro the sock ends around the hammock and secure them with a tie.

This weekend, Medicine Man hung with his Molly Mac Gear IX Hammock Sock. When he heard me say how well I fared without a tarp, he took his tarp down. Saturday night, the low temp was 16*F, and he said it was no contest... the sock did fine! It blocked the wind and there was no noisy tarp flapping around.

The difference between an IX Hammock Sock and a Canvas Hammock Sock, in very cold temps, really depends on what else you have under you. You just have to be careful about condensation when using IX. When I use an IX Hammock Sock, I put a Baby Orca right underneath the hammock.

Seeing as how my 5-in-1 has become a permanent fixture for me, I'm wondering how well one of these socks will work with it and my new Switchback.

    Color me interested!

Great news Mac. One of my first tents and sleeping bags working in the bush was made of Egyptian cotton.

Great news Mac, Though I knew it would work.
As long as the temps stay below 10*F

I am just about to do a fully breathable sock, for this next weekend in MI. But it looks like we may have a heat wave, with temps in the 30*F range and possibly rain so I may not get a chance to use it.

It was an amazing sight, I must say. Amazing.

Also, it was a pleasure hangin' with you this weekend.

Alan... we gotta get out somewhere that has white like that. That looks really good (the sock and the snow).
