    The Igloo Expedition

Another successful winter hang in the books, fellow member Mick and I did a spontaneous overnighter at Valens in Southern Ontario. Being regulars at Valens and known for “unusual” camping methods, there were rumors (Whodunnit Thread )that we had build igloos during our January trip, since we didn’t do this, we had to check it out (Ok weak excuse but the Wife bought it and I got out of the weekend to-do list). We found the igloo on a different site then the one we had in January so it wasn’t built on our snow walls (wind break around the base of our tarps). It’s a solid one and it looks like someone could have slept in it.

As for the trip, there were flurries on Saturday morning and about a foot of snow on the ground so we got in some snowshoeing. Temps dropped to -11c over Saturday night before warming to +1c by Sunday afternoon. All of our pics can be found at Here

I think that igloo is actually a quinzhee, and it's built wrong too.

The entry should descend into of a pit (cold air trap), and there should be a shelf to sleep on that is a foot or higher than the floor. Hot air rises, or more important, cold air falls. Setting up a bed at the low point means sleeping in the coldest part of the shelter.

The first half was awesome! it when stone cold before I could finish it though. Got some good advice from a co-worker this morning (hunts in the winter), when winter camping he cuts the meat into smaller pieces and putting them on the grill a couple minutes apart, as he finishes one piece the next is ready (fondue style). We normally keep meals simple in the winter but we had to try out the new DIY tripod.

To be honest, I had to look a "quinzhee" up, looking at the pictures I definitly agree. Chances are good this is just an ambitious snowfort build by kids. Valens opened the winter season with a promotion for the full service sites (RV families) so I'm thinking a couple of bord kids (who dont like cross country skiing as much as their parents) had it under construction over a couple of weekends.

Great trip thanks for sharing. Nice picture of Orion.

Valens is definitely a “Hammock Friendly” campground

The Hamilton Conservation Authority (HCA) posted a news article about Hammock Camping at Valens! We’ve been patrons for 2 seasons now and have developed a bit of a reputation for hammock camping in the winter. During our last couple of trips there has been increased interest in our gear and methods which lead to the article.
