Next years higher and colder hang.....

Having survived Mt.Rogers in 2010 and Roan Mountain in 2011 I suggest we turn our sights on Mt. Mitchell for 2012...This gives plenty of time for research and preps. Any one interested?

I don't think they allow camping on Mt. Mitchell, unless you know of a place off the Parkway...

There is a trail up from Black Mountian campground.Left a car on top for several days and did some trails that I think headed off to the north some 20 plus yrs.ago.I doubt you can drive up there in the snowy season.I'll look for my old maps.

The Black Mountain Crest Trail begins at the parking lot on top of Mt. Mitchell and heads north along the crest of the Black Mountain Range. During its 12 mile course it crosses Mt. Craig, Big Tom, Cattail Peak, and Potato Hill before descending to Deep Gap (5700.') Here the Colbert's Ridge Trail intersects from the right and descends 3.7 miles to Colbert's Creek Rd. near the Carolina Hemlocks campground. Continuing north the Crest Trail crosses Celo Knob before dropping to the trailhead at Bowlen's Creek Rd (3000').
How about some serious cold weather hiking?

I camped at Mt Mitchell 35+ years ago. Highest Mtn in the East. Beautiful hike.
I think I remember an old wooden shelter along the trail. MAybe they've changed the rules now.
