Eastern Great Lakes Hang - Winter 2011 - Call to Action!!!!!"

    Hammockers setting up a ridgeline

The autumn colours are in full glory. The nights are getting colder. Halloween's right around the corner. In my neck of the woods, that means that Old Man Winter is waxing up his skies and getting ready to come down and visit.

    We've been working on gear..
    Checking it twice..
Going to find out who's cozy on ice
    Winter Hangs are coming around!!

    (Yeah, lame, sorry)

Some of us up here in Ontario have been talking about having ourselves a good old fashioned Winter Hang, and thought it'd be nice to invite some of our hammocking friends from across the border to join us.

    Question is, when and where?
To be reasonably sure of some good, cold weather, we might want to say the last weekend of January, say Friday, Jan 28 to Sunday, Jan 30. or the first weekend of February, say Friday, Feb 4 to Sunday, Feb 6.

Ok. Next question is where? The main goal would be to hold the winter hang in a scenic location as close to possible to the middle of the group as possible. At the moment there are a number of interesting locations, Frontenac Provincial Park included, but for the sake of argument, say roughly within 3-4 hours of Toronto or Buffalo to give you an idea of possible sites.

We might want to select a location that has a practical "bail-out" option (heated-hut, cabin, motel, etc..) nearby in the event that things get really uncomfortable.

If you're interested, just post your preferred weekend and your nearest major city.

    To get the ball rolling..

Chard - January 28 - Coming out of Toronto

Look forward to seeing a whole bunch of your freezing faces out there. First hot chocolate's on me!!!

P.S., On the Survey, please select one of the Cdn/US drive options as well as one of the camping preference options.

    Cheers

    Greetings Char

    I'm in.

I think the first weekend of Feb 2011 (4-6) would be better and my preference. A few of the other winter hangs (Mt. Rogers and New Jersey Hangs) are happening the last 2 weekends of January respectively. I think this weekend would allow some of our American hanging brethren a bit of a time between hangs to book holidays etc.

I agree the challenge is finding the where part of the hang. Frontenac Provincial park would be good and it would be close for any Americans that live in Upstate New York along the I81 corridor to cross over.

Shooting for that 3 - 4 hour drive from Buffalo and Toronto puts the main areas to the Niagara Escarpment area all the way up to the Bruce Peninsula down to London/Windsor are of Ontario.

Let's get the ball rolling on this one.

Look forward to seeing a whole bunch of your freezing faces out there. First hot chocolate's on me!!!
If you have a freezing face, you're doing something entirely wrong. ;-)

    Cheers

    Brian

P.S. Mods, I think adding 2011 to the thread title would be helpful since we are talking a Jan/Feb weekend date.

If we ended up in Algonquin or Frontenac it would be a perfect location-wise for me.

    What is this poll about?

Disregard. I was just looking at the poll on the home page with no explanation of what it concerns. Sorry.

    Snow flies

    Greetings

Since the snow is falling in areas North of Toronto on this morning, I thought I would give this thread a bump for all interested parties.

I also noticed that Frontenac Provincial park has some winter camping courses and weekends planned for Jan 2011.

That might be an interesting course to take, albeit ground-dweller centric. I suppose some of the skills would transfer over, like putting you hammock in a snow coffin etc.

    Frontenac is ok with me

I have never been to Frantenac PP and have wanted to visit so that is my vote. I think thay have yurts that we could use as a warm up if we needed it.
