DIY layout and sewing table

Well I finally got tired of working on the floor, and put together a cutting table.

I re purposed a 6 X 8 foot therapy table and turned it into a 10 X 4 with a 6 foot wide end.
Oak edges all around and large enough to clamp the sections together.

It can be separated and stacked for storage. Space is limited as you can see.

After I topped the surface with hardboard it looked pretty good.

Then I thought, lets sink the sewing machine in it and have a BIG sewing surface also.
Made the fixture and cut out a spot in the table to just fit the machine.
I even mounted a lazer on the ceiling joist for needle position.

I am amazed at how much easier it is to work with larger pieces of material now

Putting the machine in the table would make handling large tarp sections much easer to handle. My wife has a larger extension on her machine. But I'm smart enough not to user her machine. Instead I use the 40 year old Elna.

The Serger is a Kenmore. It was a find from Goodwill for $15.00

I have nearly that much into the 4 spools of thread.
That was a real learning experience also.
Threading a serger from scratch, and having never seen one before.

On the internet you can find anything though.

Beautiful! I'm still using a 4x8 sheet of masonite on the floor. Dreaming of a 6' x 12' table, but I see it doesn't need to be 6' wide the entire length.

Nice surface - you can cut fabric with a soldering iron running along a straightedge on it. I got an aluminum straightedge made for working with sheetrock at the hardware store. It's two 4' sections that fasten together. If I ever get my 12' table I may buy another one so I can piece another 4' section on the end.

Wow! I place my PTI next to a table so I have feed-in and feed-out surfaces to the left of the machine, but I like your cut-out idea. How useful is the laser? It looks fantastic.

What's the height of your work surface? I've thought about a variable height table, but it would probably be easier to build up the floor next to the sewing ma... oops, PTI.
