DerekH, A couple of months ago I couldn't even spell 'Hammock' and now I are one. Everything you need is here, just look or ask and all will be reveled. Goodnight, I'm on my way out to my second night hanging.

Most of us end up poorer here but richer for being here. Olddog, Fulltime hammocker, 365 nights a year.
It is entirely possible to get along with webbing and knots; no metal required- check Shug's videos (as mentioned) and search "marlinspike hitch' or garda hitch or truckers hitch ( i use the MS, have not tried the others..)
pretty sure they were joking about the 90L pack- most of the backpackers here are trying to lighten/condense their gear for easier hiking, and still be comfortable in camp, look under lightweight or Ultralight hiking.
Amsteel is more than strong enough for suspension purposes, but webbing will not cut into the tree bark, so both are advised; just make the webbing(tree huggers) are long enough for the trees you are likely to encounter and use amsteel/whoopie slings for the rest.
hope that helps, and happy searching- the hf will occupy a considerable amount of time, if you let it...
KM (who is frequently guilty of just that...)
Hey Derek,
Welcome and good luck. I am relative newbie here too and I am still trying to perfect my set up. I went from 1 hammock to 4 overnight seems like lol. Anyway I have found that experimentation is the best solution to find your personal perfect hang. Take all the info you gather and ala carte it to what works for you.
Oh and by the way I am right down I77 from you. I work in Hiilsville Va. You will be passing by my office on your way to CLT!
