quick question to anyone who might be able to help. If I go down to my local fabric land to buy materials for an UQ will any rip stop nylon work or does it have to specifically state its down proof?
thanks in advance

When you discard arrogance, complexity, and a few other things that get in the way, sooner or later you will discover that simple, childlike, and mysterious secret known to those of the Uncarved Block: Life is Fun.
It should work if it is "calendared" but the likelihood of the clerk knowing that information is slim to none. If you have a good eye for fabric you can look at it and have a pretty good guess but it takes knowing what to look for. Calendared fabric can look like other types of fabric to an untrained eye. My suggestion would be to order from one of the vendors represented here who know what they stock and can give you advicr as to what to use.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

the more tightly it is woven, the better it will keep the down in; some bits will escape no matter what you use.
If you can see through it easily, it isn't downproof...
Calendared means squished between hot rollers. One side is definitely shinier than the other...
It helps to see both side-by-side..

+1 on ordering from vendors that specialize in outdoor materials. They know their stuff and you won't be disappointed! Plus, you will get the best service anywhere!

Seconded...
I ordered my 1.1 ripstop from here
The down stays put.

What I did was order a couple of swatch sets from OWF, or Quest Outfitters, I can't remember. They come with the little rectangles of cloth stapled to sheets of paper with their descriptions beside them. VERY useful to help identify different fabrics by eye.
