i understand what you're saying. i guess i'll just need to give it a try. you & the others wouldn't keep saying it was working so well if it weren't.
but i wont give it a 1st try this weekend at mt rogers
Yeah, I hear you. That is the reason I just left my hammock hanging and got back in the next night when it was even colder just to make sure. I still think that it has to work into a system to be effective. I had to get out of my 20* bag and get my 40* quilt (converted bag). I use insulated clothing as part of my system and with the bottom warm it really worked well.

I'm not sure what this 'pocket' looks like but I'd like to see it. This is your Clark right? I was thinking for those of us that don't have a foot pocket, we could make one. Like you said, that way the padding is very effective where it's needed. I think a simple bag mad out of 1.1 would curl the pad around the legs, but not too tight.

My goal with this 1/2 quilt was not to be the lightest but put more insulation in the critical areas. This allowed me to use more pad around my feet resulting in my feet being more insulated. My hammock forms a pocket that my feet are in with the pad around all sides. Before I was just using a pad for my heels to rest on and hoping socks and bag would do the rest. I realize now that I probably never really had enough insulation at these temps before. I have never used as much pad on my leg area before. My top insulation has decreased with the new setup due to truly being warm underneath. I have been hanging for years and am still learning something everytime I hang.

Yes, the one I am using with this UQ is the Clark. When I lay on the asym it forms a pocket at the feet with the endcap helping hold the pad around my feet. I ended up with the pad close on all sides of my feet. I normally trim the pad down to save weight in this area but was testing the UQ and pushed the torso pad down under my legs. This resulted in more pad than I have ever used around the feet/legs but was very warm and easy to control since I was not laying on it. It was the short ridgerest which is more flexible than some other CCF pads.
