    Hybrid 1/2 UQ

I finished my second UQ. The first I made for my bridge and found it would work well on my Clark UL also. It was 36x36 which worked great on the bridge because I slept on my side. After using it with my Clark a couple nights I realized that it would be nice to be a little wider. In the Clark I sleep slightly asym resulting in one shoulder and the opposite leg in the hip area being not covered by the bridge UQ. The reasons were the size and the down in the side chambers would settle a little leaving the top thinner.

I decided to use Climashield XP on the top chambers and down in the bottom middle section. This one ended up about 45x45. I used 2 layers of 5oz XP in the sides and 800fp down in the bottom. The quilt is baffled at 2.5 and overstuffed in the middle section with a little over 3oz of down. The XP weighed about 7oz total resulting in the quilt weighing about 16oz. I may change the combination of XP in the sides to lighten it up some but for now I am using as is.

The XP was not consistent in loft even in the 1 yard piece I ordered. It did not have the advertised loft but seems to work well.

I will use this UQ on my colder trips and in the intitial test the Climashield worked much better than the down on the sides. I was able to obtain almost full use the quilt with no loss of insulation on the edges.

It looks big in the hammock picture but shapes well when someone is in the hammock.

looks great to me! keep us filled in as you do more cold weather testing.
that may be a good option, using the synthetic on the sides were down tends to settle most.
I too will something make and joy in it's making

Neat idea mixing the two insulation types. Has it been cold enough to test?

I like it. So the back of your calves and your feet don't get cold? What do you do to keep your feet warm?

I use a sit-pad or my pack under my feet/legs. It really works great and you don't deal with the traditional 'pad-issues' when just using it under your legs.

So what about your feet? I usually have some foot protection from wind and cold and all from an underquilt, at least minimally.

Haven't had any problems....yet. For the most part, my feet stay on top of the pad/pack. I do wear two pairs of socks to sleep in cold weather because my feet are total sissies about the cold; got frostbite years ago and they never warm-up anymore. Between the pad/pack, socks, and the foot-box of the top quilt my feet stay as toasty as the rest of me.

Yeah, I guess the footbox of your top quilt would handle your feet fairly well unless the wind was really blowing.

I layed in it awhile at about freezing and was very warm. I have not put a full night in yet. Hoping it is cold this weekend.

I just realized everything for this one came from Thru-Hiker.

    2 yards Green 1.1 2nds
    2 yards Black 1.1 2nds
3 oz of down ( I have about 3.3 oz with the overstuff) Unless I needed to save shipping I would get the down from Speer
1 yard of Climashield XP (Pieced together to fit) 2 yards would allow cuts to not be pieced.
    1/2" nylon tie out strap
    1/8" shockcord.

I like it. So the back of your calves and your feet don't get cold? What do you do to keep your feet warm?
I use the torso length pad for this area. I let the pad roll up the side my feet are touching the hammock. Quilt or bag has footbox enclosed for top.

The Climashield XP added to the bulk more than I expected but I was able to compress fairly well. I rarely use compression sacks but will for this.
