1. ## need some reference: oz to g/sqm and strength of 35 gsm

Hey folks,

the diy bug bit me heavily. I have spit out 3 hammocks in a couple of days from parachute material I got from englishseadog on the uk *bay. I asked him the specs and he said it's about 35 grams per square meter.
How does this compare to the measurements given here. I see a lot of talk about 1.1 oz ripstop 1.9 oz ripstop etc.

also, can anyone inform me of the weigth I can load on a 35 gsm hammock.
I was already in my hammock with 2 of my kids, so I know for a fact it holds 100 + 20 + 18 + 5 (gear) while swinging heavily because a third kid is pushing us, about 150 kilos

I made my first prototype a gathered end hammock, no whipping, which I enhanced later in the week (beautified the hem) and made 2 for my kids with end whippings, one with a webbing reinforced hem.
They love 'm.

Hope my gf digs the holes in the walls all over the place when she sees them when she comes back from snowboarding tomorrow

2. My rough calculations suggest that if you multiply g/sq.m by .03 you get oz/sq. yd. That would make your 35 g/sq.m fabric 1.05 oz/sq.yd, which isn't very heavy. Have you weighed a piece of it to confirm the weight that was reported to you?

Hey WV, no, I don't have a fine enough weight measuring device.
however, now I do now that 1.1 oz actually means 1.1 oz per square yard, I was missing that piece of info.
Should parachute material be heavier than 1.1 oz/sqyd ?

4. for those interested, WV's calculation is as follows

1 oz = 28.34 gram
1 yard = 0,9144 meter
1 square yard = 0.836 square meter

1 oz/sqyd = 28,34 gr/0,836 sqmtr = 33,899 gr/sqmtr

oz/sq.yd -> gr/sq.mtr => multiply by 33.9
gr/sq.mtr -> oz/sq.yd => divide by 33.9 (multiply by appr. 0.3)

Wow! I did all that? All I remember is that I got there somehow.
