    Amsteel Help

Now that I've wasted about two feet of Amsteel - I'm turning to you guys for help.

I'm following the videos on YouTube on the Whoopie Slings but I can't get past the first step.

Every time I try to pull the loose end through the center of the Amsteel, the end spreads out, making it impossible to push or pull it through.....I've tried a dozen times now and can't seem to get it to work....

So what's the secret? I'm using 22-gauge solid copper, doubled over.....

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry Robbie, but I can't visualize what you are describing.
The only time I've seen Amsteel spread out is when being pushed from both ends... think of a Chinese finger puzzle.
Any chance you can post some pics or a video of what you are doing?

I've had my share of problems with buries in amsteel. Welcome to the club.

I don't think I can get a picture of what is happening, but I will try to describe it....

On the cut end, when I begin to push or pull the amsteel into the opening to start the bury, the fibers spread out, creating a ball of fibers too large to through the center of the bury.

I've been trying different things for about 2.5 hours now and haven't gotten anywhere.

did you pull out some strands and cut them to make a taper?
I did this using a plastic "yarn needle" it helped a lot that the taper became smaller even when folded than the original diameter, then I pushed the rope up on the needle shaft to open it and let the folded part in.. Hope that helps, KM

make sure that you are tapering the end that you are pulling through. then when you hook the tapered end fold it back around the wire so that all loose ends are face opposite the direction of pull. This way, with patience, will prevent bunching.

    Robbie,

Have you tried trimming a few strands out of the loose end to give it a taper? That may help you to get it started. There are a few videos about burying the loose end that show how to trim 6 strands out of the braid so that the end is smaller and enters the bury a little easier.

Good luck. I'm looking forward to my amsteel arriving later this week to re-rig my DN and may be going through the same frustration.

Tapering seems to be the trick....I tapered it, and then folded it over the wire (of course it had to break while trying this)....and it worked!!

Now I have to figure it out for the 12-inch bury, adjustable end.....

    Thank you guys for helping!!!!!

Now it seems easy - I just made an eye, and remade it several times because the bury wasn't long enough.....tapering makes a huge difference!!!

    Thanks again!!
