    Tarp idea

I have been given A LOT of rip stop nylon in exchange for some work I did. I was thinking of making a tarp. I've read of people using Tyvek tape on different projects and also making their own seam sealant out of thinned silicone. My idea is to use the Tyvek tape on the ridge line (no sewing) and coating the tarp with some thinned sylicone for water proofing.

I'd like to say that I'm not opposed to sewing, so the tape on the ridge line is just to see if it would work.

The DIY water proofing again is just to see if it is possible to make that much fabric water resistant without buying silnylon.

I know there are a lot of people on here that make their own gear and I would love to hear of any pittfalls you foresee for me. Or if you have already tried this please let me know so I don't waste a bunch of time.

On the Tyvek tape ridge, IMO sew it with a flat felled seam and waterproof it with the rest of the tarp. Super strong, looks good.

...or you could sell the ripstop and use the $ to buy real sil.
Maybe not as much fun, but a better formula for good results, I suspect.

BTW... I'm short on ripstop and have some projects I'd like to do.

The only problem I forsee with your idea is that the silicone/mineral spirits might mess with the Tyvek tape. If you tape after treating, it won't stick. :-/
I would just sew it, then treat it.
