    Single layer VS Double???

I'm preparing to start stitching my first DIY hammock this week. I've read thousands of pages of this forum and have most of the details worked out. I'm down to one final decision on the design and thought I would take a quick poll. My first thought was to make a double layer hennessy clone so that I could stuff a blue pad in the middle to get a bit of shape to it with some simple insulation. (Thinking mostly warmer month camping.) Now I'm wondering if that is really the best choice.

    So...

Single or double layer? Your thoughts, opinions, experiences?

    Thanks

    Jeremiah

I prefer the double because it gives me the flexibility to add a pad between layers if I want while greatly reducing pad slippage. Yet, I don't have to use a pad if I don't want to. The other thing I like about the double layer is that it makes it WAY harder for mosquitoes (and their ilk) from sticking their blood-suck-ee hoo-haahs through and into me.

Great post. I'm curious how others feel about this.

I posted a similar thread a couple/few weeks back and didn't get much feedback.

If you search for "double layer", there is some good reading.

I decided to go ahead with my double layer 1.1oz and am a day or two from finishing...

I own a WBBB Dbl 1.0 and I tried the pad inbetween layers thing only to find that it was annoying at best. My vote would just be to go with whichever is lightest for the strength that you need.

I dislike my double layer with pads. hard to adjust the pad while it is in between layers. mosquitos cant sting through a pad either

    Single layer with UQ.

I bought the WBBB 1,7oz single layer with the intent of later buying the 3 season burrow from Stormcrow. I sat down with my friend before I bought anything and figured out what i wanted to use it for and came to the conclusion that this fit my needs the best.

My friend has the WBBB 1,1oz double layar and he sticks a broad but flimsy CCF pad in between and finds that it slips around during the night and he wakes up with cold arms and/or shoulders.

The UQ design does not move around as much, gives better insulation and is easier to setup.

One of each. You will eventually build more...IT IS INEVITABLE!

If weight is your concern go single.
If the pad pocket is your ideal way to add a layer of insul., then go that route.

If you build a single, you can always add a second layer down the road. Just make a matching layer, unwhip what you have as a single and whip the two layers together..think modular hammock.

Long story short, build it the way YOU want. You will be happy...till the next one.

Starter hammock I would say double layer hammock if you are not going to make an underquilt any time soon, I was suprised how comfortable it actually was with a pad..... + if you decide to go single later later its less weight/cost for your next project
When life gets you down......make an underquilt!

My vote is a single layer hammock, unless you need the double to hold more weight. A double layer would be my choice for a real cold winter night, so you can have the pad + 3 season quilt. Keeping the ounces and pounds down makes a serious difference in backpacking comfort and stamina, especially, if your not used to the physical activity backpacking all day with a load on your back.

Gargoyle is right that having both is inevitable. Plus, you can introduce a.k.a edu-ma-cate 'yer friends, family, peers, and associates.
I like big hammocks - I cannot like.

I voted for double for many of the same reasons as creativeKayt.
