    Fleece Underquilt?

I spent a slightly chilly night hammocking in the Red River Gorge last weekend. I used a blue camping pad from Walmart that I cut down to 3/4 length. I was of course fine while lying on the pad but my legs and any other part of me that wasn't on the pad got kinda chilly.

Has anyone ever tried making an underquilt or even a inner liner for a HH out of fleece?

You can pick up thick fleece at Walmart for about 4.50 a yard. They even have camo. It seems fleece would be a less bulky solution to carrying the blue pad.

Hmm sounds interesting. I might just have to move up my sewing machine purchase date and see about this.

Make sure it's windproof. Or sew on a layer of DWR if the fleece isn't windproof.

I have been thinking about this idea for few days and I am almost of the opinion that fleece would better serve as an inner liner.

You would eliminate air gaps because you would basically be resting on top of the material, holding it against the hammock, when you lie in the hammock. You could also have full head to toe coverage. By adding a few loops of nylon webbing to the inside of the hammock or some velco would be an easy way to attach it.

    Jeff,

If fleece were to be used as an underquilt I would definatly use an outer DWR ripstop nylon shell. I have some of that lying around. Also Windstopper fleece is much more expensive that what you can buy at WalMart (I checked Outdoor Wilderness Fabrics).

    cheap underquilt

For $15 (at wal-mart) you can get everything you need to make a 1 in loft continuous fiberfill underquilt. I made one that came in at 19oz (48x84). I used $1 yard nylon taffeta and crib quilt insulation.

Arkwater, I think we'll need pics of that underquilt...sounds like a great write-up for the Homemade Gear section. (That was a hint.)

Sorry!! It was just something I threw together to test for fit. I did not take any pics. I do have some down comming this week and already have some 1.1 ripstop to make the final product. I will take pics of that project. My 5 year old took the prototype and I have not seen it since!
