    Thoughts on cuben fiber

    I have not seen cuben fiber in person but several people here use it and seem to like it. What are your pros and cons of this material? I ask because I was talking to a friend of mine who does some pretty serious sailing about sail materials. I mentioned cuben fiber and he said a lot of sails are now made of kevlar and carbon for better strength and weight. He just happened to say, "I could get you some cuben fiber for free for all that hammock crap." "Crap"? While I will defend my hobby/obsession/addiction, I'm certainly not going to look a gift horse in the mouth when a piece of cuben fiber is at stake.

    So, would you use this as tarp material? Why?

    Thanks,

    Pros:
    Lightest material out there (to my knowledge)
    Strength is as strong if not stronger (depending on the thickness) of silnylon
    Waterproof
    Packs down SMALL
    Much less noise than Spinnex

    Cons:
    To maintain the structure’s strength the tarp should be bonded and not sewn. Sewing will weaken the material and may cause separation under stress (I’ve seen it).

    Expensive

    Would I recommend it? Yes if it’s in your budget.

    i've seen WV's --- real nice.
    taped ridgeline and taped tie outs.

    i'm not sure if its meant to be pitched super tight like sil?

    but if you get a hole in it, just put some tape on it.

    if it were in my budget, (and i actually needed another tarp) i'd get one just to give it a test drive.

    Why?

    Lets see... if you figure a tarp that is 11x9...

    Silnylon = ~13oz
    SpinUL = ~11oz
    CF = ~5oz

    Think that pretty much answers "why" for me.

    I was about to ask for a strength comparison but just remembered somewhere in me head I have heard of cuben fiber groundsheets also.

    Does this mean the tarps are pretty tough or are the groundsheets just made thicker?

    I think I would lose my mind if I put a hole in a $250 tarp lol.

    How resistant are cuben to embers and sparks?(i'm thinking woodstoves placed under the tarp here).

    Ill let you know once it arrives but it compacts super small, very light, and less noisy then spin UL. And a new material/piece of gear to play around with. I like the takier feel as opposed that sleek feel of Spin, I still really like Nylon just a very durable material. I think spin will hold up pretty well or at least I am hoping it does. I cant wait to get my tarp from Z-Packs

    CF is highly unfriendly towards high temperatures. A spark will melt through CF like xenomorph blood through a spaceship.

    Note to self: Keep CF far away from fire. Far, far away.
