    Insulation?

Ok, a question that I am sure comes up often. Which is best, an under quilt, or a four seasons cover? I am trying to figure out which is best for the situation that I am in. I camp in the smoky mtns. most all the time and during the winter months the cold is a wet cold. So is it better to use a layer that is wind and water proof on the bottom or would it be best to have an under quilt?

Your question is a little confusing to me, I don't understand what you mean by '4 season cover', can you link to an example?

As to what would work best, as always, it depends

I've been in some severely wet conditions and I've always used a down under quilt, never had a problem, but I'm sure there are some who have. You can get a nice 3 season down UQ and then add a weather cover when needed. Or you can get a big tarp with doors that will help, or ... on and on and on.

If you are camping in winter conditions, personally, I'd look into a full length under quilt and maybe a tarp with doors. There are several options for those from forum members, just look under the vendor section.

What I am referring to is the four seasons cover that Hennessy Hammocks sells. It is basically a water proof undercover with a breathable top cover. I have a buddy who uses it and has problems with sweating, brings up the question from before, would the water proof under cover just be to hot and not breathable enough? I have a big tarp that covers perfect, just wondering about the butt being cold! And by the way with the tarp pulled down close the top is quite warm.

ah, ok, I think what you are describing is the Hennessey SuperShelter. If that's it, there are several folks around who use them and are very happy. The sweating part seems to, at least somewhat, depend on the individual. I can't use any amount of pad without creating a puddle, but there are those who have no problems.

I prefer a down underquilt and, if it's very cold (below 20) I'll use a small pad either under my feet or butt.

Do a search for 'vapor barrier' but be careful, that's a deep rabbit hole

Thanks for the advice, sounds like the under quilt would be the right choice for me. I read a lot of threads and I think under quilt is the way to go.

Have both under quilts and SuperShelters. Both work but it's UQs I grab when heading out.

I would second the underquilt. Has been more versatile (temp wise) for me.

Good point that I didn't mention, many folks prefer synthetic underquilts (and several vendors have those options). They generally are a bit heavier and bulkier than down, but you don't have to be as careful.

Personally, I use down quilts and the only time wet has been a problem was with blowing fog, nothing stays dry in that condition

Check out the Jacks-R-Better Mount Washington 3 Convertable. It' a 2/3rds under quilt(UQ) when you want it and a full UQ when you need it. I've taken mine below 0F with a pad and have been plenty warm.
